hi all sorry probably a newbie question here since I built my new rig it is connected to a 51 inch Samsung tv at 1080 resolution vi hdmi .

will I get any benefit buying a proper monitor as far as fps go? I have no idea how the scaling is done in the tv itself I guess as both are 1080.

im quite happy using a tv atm if there is no real gain from a monitor apart from the refresh rate .

I game on a 55" Plasma which is 1080p @60hz.

It's too big to sit infront of and do desktop stuff, so I also have a 27" 1440p monitor. Also 60hz.

Some people think response times/input lag on TV's are slower (depends on the screen) but I don't notice it.

Input lag being the time between pushing a controller button and the action happening on screen.

If the TV is running at 1080p then as far as gaming (and even videos/movies for that matter) is concerned then fill your boots.
I wouldn't recommend it for day to day desktop stuff, the text will look awful and you'll destroy your eyes by either squinting or sitting too close to read it.

HDTV's are great for PC gaming when you use the gamepad anything else apart from very light web browsing is a big no no. Burnt images & eyestrain are common if its used for web browsing.

As long as you only use it for gaming it should be fine I have used HDTV's for almost 10 years PC gaming with a wireless gamepad & it never seems big enough to me anymore (I am currently using a 60" Plasma).

You would notice a big difference in image quality if you used a decent monitor but FPS wise not much as I presume you use vsync as screen tearing on a 51" would be horrendous

Also ensure your HDTV does not use settings which auto adjust the contrast/brightness than can make the screen dim a lot suddenly then increase rapidly on other scenes in the game which could cause the bulb to burn out faster as some PC games constantly trigger those cicuits in some HDTV's.
