Monitors and eyes

CRT's are worse than TFT's. But either are bad for you. Your eyes will dry out and you won't squint as much, leading to eye strain. Also the muscles in your eyes will focus at a short distance, causing short sightedness.

** this is from my optician who advised I don't wear my glasses for screen work as it will worsen the muscular issue.

Doh, I wear my contacts 95% of the time on my PC and specs late at night.. I cant see my monitor unless my face is right infront of it though! lol

Has there been any (relatively) long term studies on the effects?

After using a TFT at uni been using a CRT all summer and the difference is very noticeable to me in terms of effects on the eyes.

I had a mitsubishi diamond pro 19" (100hz on 1152x864) and I used to get bad eye strain and blood shot eyes. Not had any problems with my TFT's in the 4 years since I have had'em.

I’ve had this discussion with quite a few Orthopticians as I've got a problem with my sight (not brought on by computers). They all concluded that there was no real evidence to prove that looking at computer screens for a length time damaged your eyesight.

However, as previously mentioned, eyes can get tired from excessively bright screens and dry from not blinking. Obviously they can also tire from squinting at small text on a screen that is too far away, too close or too high etc. But this is not exclusive to computers and should only tire your eyes, not damage them.

Please note I’m no expert in this field, just passing on what was said to me. If in doubt seek professional advice etc.

Regards

'tis good to refocus your eyes on something further away,
I like to sit where I can see the outside world, and try and check out the trees when I think about it.

Well I've been using screens since I was 12. I'm now 38. My eyesight is shot to pieces. My brothers is fine and he rarely uses screens.

I've been using screen for 15 years and although I need glasses my eyes aren't that bad. My brother who doesn't use screens very often is blind as a bat without his. If you take regular breaks as suggested you'll be fine.

...Using a good Crt with a decent refresh rate is much more preferable than a TFT.

Don't use the max res just 'cos you can go for something thats comfortable which ever type of screen you care to choose.

As mentioned take regular breaks and focus your eyes on something furhter away every so often.

Should minimise eyestrain and headaches.

reading this thread is making my eyes hurt lol...

theres so many variables, if your sight a decent distance away from your screen, with nice brightness, good size fonts etc... and take regular breaks(recommended 15min breaks for every 2.30hrs) then you should be fine...

on the other hand if the monitor is to bright or dark, to far or too close etc... then problems could arise...

I had read the focusing thing is the best way to exercise your eyes, pick some object close and something behind it further away and switch focus slowly back and forth for 5-10 mins every now and again.

I'm short sighted and my brothers eyesight is excellent, yet he has spent in his life probably five times as long looking at a PC screen. He also spends hours reading btw which is supposed to have a similar effect. So you can't learn much from individual cases. It's just I inherited my mums eye genes and my brother got my dads. Simple as that.

Ive been using CRTs for years and never had any notable eye strain issues , Just have to avoid running 60hz refresh rate. My Dell 2001FP LCD was so bright it actually did bother my eyes after extended usage.
