Monitors becoming more expensive?

How come G-Sync monitors have increased in price a lot recently? I bought a Acer Predator XB271HU for £500 in March 2016 from OcUK. I looked on the site today as I wanted to get a second and it is now £728 which seems like a big price increase.

I bought my Dell S2716DG which only has a TN panel for £500 in October 2016 and had to shop around to get it for this price, so things had already increased in price by then. I think the reasons are a lack of competition in the high end GPU arena and the dreaded Brexit effect with the resulting fall in the value of the pound.

1. Retailers/manufacturers love to milk the consumers
2. Small consumer market compared to the likes of the TV market
3. As gibbo has confirmed, he has had to up prices all round to absorb the costs for all the returns because of bad bleed and other QC issues, he either does that or takes of money from the people returning monitors (iirc, up to 25%)
4. Brexit i.e. pound value being ****

But yup, absolutely crazy prices for **** old LCD tech. My 55" OLED 4k HDR 2017 is an absolute bargain (£1099) compared to all these so called "high end" monitors......

Pffffffffft, got my mate a second-hand XB270HU for £200!!! Got my Asus UW for £600 only a few months old so their are still bargains out there. Just don't buy brand new imo...

But yes, we're being hammered a little by the sterling rate this last 12+ months :(

I know, it's a really poor state of affairs with astronomical prices for poor products.

Seeing quotes suggesting £1500 for the next batch of new products from the likes of asus makes me laugh.

Think I may just join Nexus, I could switch round the study and get a wall mounted OLED ... the old LG 55EF9500 in the living room needs an update :p

My last monitor (top of the range dell IPS in 2007) cost about 400 quid.
My current monitor (top of the range dell IPS in 2017) cost about 400 quid.

But yes, people want more than 60Hz and variable refresh rates - and those things are a rip off atm.

This reminds me I had my old ROG SWIFT PG278Q G-Sync 144Hz monitor sitting in my loft for about 18 months I wonder if it worth anything if I tried selling it

Do it!!!!!!!

No monitor and no upcoming monitor will come anywhere close to an OLED TV.

g sync is a rip off but nvidia own the high end gpu market so they can afford to milk customers.

120hz and above is also new technology within the monitor market. so you have to pay a premium for this.

then add on brexit. value of pound dropping. bad quality control. tbh i don't see why consumers should be punished for manufacturers making crap screens tbh.

maybe for watching a movie, but TVs oled or not is disgusting if used for PC gaming, ive experienced top oled tvs and 4k hdr ect, and comparing proper pc performance high extreme settings compared to my 1440p 144z vs oled 4k hdr, the tv is ugly looking, slow response laggy ect ect like looking at a 85 year old hag vs a 21 year old model.......

120Hz has been around for about 6 years, I don't think there should be a premium.

Old LCD tech that hasn't improved in terms of colour temperature uniformity, backlight bleed in 2 years. I'm at a loss right now because everyone involved in the design, manufacture and sale of this class of display is determined to pass ancillary costs on to the consumer. Viewsonic XG2703 went from 579.99 to 639.99 on Amazon during Black Friday to 752.00 today.

I bought an XB271HU during Black Friday that I subsequently returned due to a shocking colour temperature gradient of 800K from left to right. To the naked eye, the left side is yellow and the right side is blue. I don't expect these panels to be perfect and have learned to lower expectations considerably but this is silly.

I'm ok with spending 700.00 to not play panel lottery games since it is easily one of the worst aspects of buying a new monitor. While the price has certainly increased, manufacturing standards have not. The logistics alone are hell where I live (in the Irish country) and then there is the cost of international shipping and return for a 6kg parcel for a 50/50 chance of having to do the same thing again. Only next time it could be for a different but no less absurd problem like dust particles trapped underneath the glass (as if these things weren't assembled in a clean room or something).

Seeing the Viewsonic go up more than 150.00 in 3 months was deflating. Guess I'll wait another year or just wait for an OLED breakthrough.

With what you have just said, I doubt you have even laid eyes on an 2017 OLED, let alone used one.... Either that, or you had the OLED setup incorrectly.... Or used one of the brands with very high input lag.

I have experienced all types of displays going way back to CRT and whilst OLED TV is not as responsive as a 144HZ monitor, it is still incredibly responsive (in 120HZ mode) compared to most monitors out there and unless you are playing the likes of CS:GO, chances are, most people won't care given how superior the IQ is, plenty of people out there have been happy to give up sync tech + 144HZ just because of OLED and the perfect IQ.

So I'm not quite sure what you mean by "tv is ugly looking" Nothing comes close to the IQ OLED provides, if you think a LCD display, especially a monitor looks good compared to OLED, then lol........ that is all :D

If input lag is the absolute number 1 requirement then great, go ahead and enjoy that 144HZ monitor.

The problem with TVs for me is the sheer size of them. I have a small room and a small desk. I don't live in a castle. It isn't practical for someone like me to rock a 55" display on my desk. In a living room its fine.

If LG decided to make a sub 40" OLED for lilliputian living rooms, I'd totally consider it a viable alternative on a desk because the downsides are so much more palatable to me than getting another garbage IPS type gsync monitor. It will never happen but all I got is dreams right now.

I don't live in a castle either :p

But yes, having a 40+" as your main display for your PC on your desk is utterly stupid, I definitely wouldn't do that. Mine is pretty much just set up as a TV i.e. far back with a wall to itself, still have my main monitor on my desk for all desktop type of usage i.e. browsing, everything else media/game related gets put on the TV.

I took a notion mid November to look into upgrading my Acer XB270HU and thought I had settled on a replacement - an AOC 32 inch VA Freesync 144hz (model number escapes me right now). I bought it as I had come to a conclusion that I didn't need g-sync as I was running at decent enough FPS at 1440p anyway. Got the AOC and didn't particularly like to colour reproduction or viewing angles on the VA panel but one thing I noticed in FarCry 4 and GTA V - I need G-sync! It just works so well you don't even notice it working until it's not there. But to the point I actually wanted to make. In this 4 week(ish) period I had my Acer (which is mint albeit second hand) listed on the Rainforest, fleabay and Gumtree and didn't have one enquiry at all, I had it as low as £300 at one stage so there clearly must be deals out there somewhere if I couldn't get that. By the by I returned the AOC and kept my Acer which I'm very glad I did - it cost me £440 around 2 years ago so prices are clearly silly right now so if I keep it for another year or so it should represent good value for money.

It's all the old people voting to leave the EU. Decimated the pound. "Oh we don't care about the financial impact, it's for the good of the country!". Old people, we hate you. This is not good for our addictions at all. It just makes us want to raid your pension to cover the extra cost of a new monitor.
