I've just taken delivery of a 100-400L IS, judging on the weight i think i'm gonna need a monopod to support the weight on long shooting sessions.

Anyone use one with a big lens and if so what are good model/makes?

Got a Manfrotto 679B for about 30 squid off feebay when I got my 70-200 f2.8. Top bit of kit for the money. Was going to get a cheapo one, but most of the cheap ones are not designed to take the weight of the bigger lenses.

 I've never had a problem using mine all day. Gym membership? :p :D

I bought one shortly after I got my 100-400 for the same reason your considering one.

It's never been used in anger.

Too much hassle, it got in the way and the lens isn't that heavy anyway.

Exactly the same here.
Edit: the one I got was the Manfrotto 679
