Montenegro - Recommendations/hotels?

OK hadn't appreciated it's Monte Carloesque appearance in Casino Royal was a con -
Although there is a 'Hotel Splendido' in the Bay of Kotor, most of the key scenes took place in the quaint spa town of Loket in the western part of the Czech Republic. Director Martin Campbell's hopes that Montenegro's tourism would erupt as a result of the movie came true.

Went to Kotor on a day trip from Croatia and it looked pretty nice, with big yachts on the river, havent been anywhere else in Montenegro so cant say its a dump as dLockers says

We did a split Montenegro/Croatia two week holiday in 2017.

Kotor Bay is very touristy, especially when the big cruise liners pull in. The Kotor Serpentine up the side of the Black Mountain from which Montenegro takes it name is fun in a hire car, just watch out for mad Germans in huge motor homes coming the other way on the 27 hairpin bends.

Plenty of old castles to be visited, including the old fort at Herceg Novi. It is all a bit dull and rundown away from the tourist areas.

Be aware that if you intend to cross the Montenegri/Croatian border in a hire car, you need a special permit from the hire company.

Cavat in Croatia is very Balkans On Sea, but it does have some nice villas and a very posh part. Best part is the water taxis running to Dubrovnik and back on the hour as getting parked there is a PITA and expensive.

Good thread for me as I am talking to a mate about doing the (11hour, spectacular) train trip from Belgrade to Bar (Montenegro) next May.

How much is beer in Montenegro? Anyone know?

Also, does everywhere shut early?

I went six years ago, stayed in Budva (Freedom Hostel) and visited Kotor for a bit. It was a stunning place. Friendly people, great seafood, cheap!
I spent a few hours in Podgorica and it was a bit rough, but quite liked it.
It is very touristy though, and was full of Russians when I was there.

Hotel forza mare, on kotor bay but not in the main strip. The little coffee shop / wine bar on the bottom floor is great, as is the jacuzzi 2 floors up with the view of the bay, great fir watching sunset - we had them get it ready with a chill bottle of wine each evening after heading out and about on the days.

Would recommend the white water day trip - the river is beautiful. The mausoleum is pretty cool as well - quite the views!

Also worth getting a boat charter to see the blue caves - the caves are cool, but some of the other sites are pretty awesome as well. Avoid days in town when the cruisers are in though!
