Figured I would take this rain break to to ask about watching the F1 at Monza.

I've managed to convince the GF that we can go to the Italian GP next year, so long as we wrap it up in a week long holiday in Italy. The plan is to spend the Sat and Sun at the track, and the rest of the week 'in Italy'. Depending on when flights are available the Race may be at the start or end of the week, or in the middle.

So, 2 questions:

Whats a good way to watch the race at Monza? I'm tempted by the grandstand on the first chicane. Good corner and the seats aren't to expensive. Do you get a roaming set on Saturday?

And where's good places to go around Monza for the GF's holiday. We will probably hire a car so travelling around and spending a couple of days in different places is a possibility. I think Rome's a bit of a mission isn't it.

When I went we sat at the first chicane and it's great as you get a full view right down the straight if you get a good enough spot. You are able to walk around the track at all times except for the actually GP as there's very few designated areas unlike Silverstone as I recal.

We stayed in Milan central when we went and it was decent enough, but for a holiday with the GF, maybe somewhere a bit less city like.

I remember when we did a cross-euro train journey. To be honest we did Switzerland to Venice in a day (via Monza), so you have quite a few options available. Admittedly it was the morning.

But yeah, we went via Milan Central (it looked dire) as above, and ended up in Venice. You could stay by some of the Italian Lakes? To be honest, I think you could pick pretty much anywhere in the North of Italy to stay and it would only be half a day away on a train.

You can fly to Bergamo which is pretty cheap via Ryanair, or at least it used to be. The transfer coach from there to Milan at least is cheap enough.

I would go to Lake Como from there personally, it's a lovely area - Como itself is a cracking little town.

Milan is not a particularly brilliant city to visit, the Duomo and San Siro are worth a look but that's about it.

I'll second Lake Como - beautiful place. Stayed in a lovely little hostel with my band a few years back - the wine was cheap, lovely and plentiful!
