I think this is in the right place... well i'll be turning 16 next month, which means three things:

  • I can legally have sex.
  • I can put on the lottery.
  • I can get a moped license.
And it's the third one that i've got a few questions about. I found this page which seemed to answer a lot of them. I was just wondering if anybody here had done it, and if so would you recommend it?

As i understand you have to apply for a provisional moped license (£50) then complete a CBT course (£100 ish). Then for a full license you have to do a theory test (around £20) and a practical test (£50-100). Then there's the getting a moped and insuring it which varies a lot...

I was hoping somebody could tell me if i was right, explain a bit more about the costs involved and offer your opinion as to if you think it would be worth looking more into. Thanks a lot :)

Please wait until you're seventeen. Then, you can either get a proper bike, or a car if that's your preference. The less of these chav-peds on the road the better.

You mean mod scooter? ;)

But yeah, i haven't reached any firm decisions. There's not many places i travel to now that i can't do in under an hour on my pedal bike... i'm just thinking that it would be a good experience, and to get that now would be valuable for when i started doing some more serious motoring later on, even if i don't actually end up getting a moped.

Thanks for all the help guys... well, most of you :p

Do you reckon it affects the situation in any way that the only way i can think of raising the cash would be to make and sell guitars?

No you can't lol.

Well lets see, doing some rough calculations, if it can manage around 100MPG and a gallon is roughly equal to 4.5l, and petrol is say £1.20/l then it would cost £5.40 to travel 100 miles - £10.80 for 200. Close enough? ;)

Thing is though, would you want to travel 200 miles if you're not allowed on motorways? If you did pass a full test and got the restricter taken off then according to the DVLA it would no longer be a moped - would this mean that you would then be allowed on motorways?

Okay, i have a question. What the hell happened? It seems to me like (as is often the case) there was a good choice of great mopeds between the early 60's right up till the end of the 80's, with some really iconic models like the fizzy and the Super Cub. These ran their course and were replaced by... what, exactly? As far as i can tell mopeds of today are either cheap plastic rubbish or aimed at chavs. Thing is though, with these sorts of restrictions there's not many places that you can improve, and 30 or 40 year old mopeds that have been looked after are miles better than those available today, and were a fair wack cheaper when you take inflation into account. They got the formula right, and with just a few small adjustments to prevent rust and stuff like that there's no reason i can see for them not to be made and sold exactly as they were, as long as they're priced sensibly.

Actually, it seems as though Honda still make the Super Cub... it's just impossible to find any information on the latest incarnations :(

Are you seriously suggesting a monkey bike? A full on moped was unpopular enough, are they even road legal? And if so, is there any point in having one over a push bike?

Not seriously, just thought I'd mention it as they seem to be quite popular.

Of course, just as they were back in the 70's.

:confused: I'm really lost with your question; is there any point in getting any other kind of moped over a push bike?

Now here's where i regret posting from my phone at 1 in the morning, but may i point out that i wasn't around in the 70's?

As for the last part, i'm not sure either. So lets just forget about it ;) But still, i'm quite tall anyway so i think a monkey bike would be just too unpractical.
