Im building dad a new base unit.

Now I got a 8400 now he wont need it clocking and only surfs the net and a few odd bits an bobs.

Now Do I put my E4500 in his set up and I take the 8400 (clock it) I play games.

I know what I should do, and what I would like to do.

Ooooo you know you want it! and unless hes tech savvy n has any idea what an E4500 even is just sly it off for a better gaming exp...

Ask him if he'd rather have the nasty power greedy, pricey to run, planet-killing chip, or the sweet, runs-on-air, greenery than kermit's bum, costs nothing to run, chip.

You need to read more BOFH mate LOL

The 8400 is the more power efficient cpu though  I guess he could lie to his dad.

I would do it buddy, my old man always gets my hand me downs and even then his pc is always better spec'ed than most people’s :D

Take it, but tell him you're doing so. Tell him the one you have is better for the net and the one he has is better for games (by 'better' I mean 'better suited', but don't tell him that!) so it makes much more sense to swap.

:D Silly question :D I am only clocking my E8400 at 4.1Ghz with no effort on air and getting a 3DMark06 reading of over 17000 and it is great for gaming. You know the answer. ;) Would he know or see the difference between a stock E4500 and a stock E8400 when surfing?

Every time your Bios loads and you see E8400 you'll feel guilty, within 6 months you'll be hanging from the light fitting with a note to your father.

Just discuss it with him!

I agree.

Tell your father about it. Assure him you can get the E4500 running at a little faster than what the e8400 is right now (3Ghz vs 3.12Ghz). Then he is losing hardly anything for speed with his internet or other task and then you have the power to unleash on your tasks/games as well as being able to tinker.

That way your conscience is clear and you don't have to lie to a family member. :)

I'm loving the "don't lie to dad" brigade.

"of course there's a santa claus"
"timmy the dog has gone to a farm, in Wales".
"of course there's an easter bunny."
"go to bed or the monster under the bed will get you".

So what's so bad about
"Of course that's the chip you ordered dear old daddykins".

I could even look him in the eye MUUUHAHAHAHA

(Hesky, mods must all by schufosi or something LOL )

HAHAHA :D
I suppose it depends what kind of person you are, I get guilty easily and can't live with it :p

might as well just tell him from the off, cos if he gets curious & spots one day, either at bios boot up or else where that you've pulled a fast one, you'll get a right load of grief.

Hey you know your dad mate, not us. My dad would happily let me swap it out, in fact he would probably offer it if he knew enough about CPUs.

Personally speaking, I could never (knowingly) dump on my parents no matter what.

Just explain and ask mate.
