I got my wife's Picasso back yesterday lunchtime, new power steering pump fitted, trouble is the steering is far stiffer than it was prior to the old pump failing and the dealers are closed until the 4th January.

I suspect they never bothered bleeding it after fitting the new pump and I don't have a clue on how to do it myself.

Is it likely to do any damage driving it with air in the system?

Cheers

Open the fluid reservoir cap and lock steering left and right, top up if necessary.

^^ This but do the Left to right a few times to warm/loosen the fluid then top up.

thanks chaps, tried: engine idling, cap off, locked left and right a few times, no fluid lost and no foaming or anything in the reservoir but still stiff.

As it's the same at low/high revs I don't think it's the aux. belt that needs adjustment, possibly a knackered steering rack?

Well my clio used to be able to adjust how strong you wanted the power steering through the computer port under the ask tray. I should know the Motor packed up and would only work right if it was turned down.

Could be this is set wrong. Id take it to a local independant if you want it sorted before xmas.

Just took it out for a drive, pulled up to fill up with petrol and could hear a loud ticking noise from under the bonnet (wasn't there before I took the car in to be mended), had a look and the pulley wheel on the pump seems to have some side to side motion like the shaft is bent or something.
