more fun from amazon

I've been to the amazon warehouses in Peterborough and the one near milton keyens I think it is (couple of years ago now, can't quite remember which run I was out with with) they are more like labour camps than your average warehouse.

Every body looked very miserable and the security was the kind you'd expect for a arms factory.

Not as bad as the Know How warehouse at Newark though, that's horrible.

Yeah unfortunatly some companies think this is acceptable :( from what I've heard overall conditions in those warehouses are pretty close to the description of "labour camp".

All to aware tho that some level of security is needed - we've had seasonal workers steal stuff from the warehouse before but its fairly rare usually.

One of the head guys was interviewed a few years ago on radio 5 over poor working terms and conditions for seasonal workers over the festive period.

Basicaly, well did say, there's plenty of people that will work for us.

People don't like it, leave and let them come.

I took a personal choice not to shop at amazon since.

and thats the attitude of many managers in a lot of lower skilled jobs. and to be blunt a few people on here, who seem to think abusing people and bullying is acceptable because they dont have the ability to do anything else but low skilled jobs.

My Mum opening her Xmas present from Amazon to discover that a worker had opened her camera box and replaced it with a used cheap one instead, does suggest that there are those who attempt to abuse company trust, could well have been a seasonal worker.

That sounds more like someone has sent a second hand one back as a return and its not been spotted.

That could be down to a multitude of reasons. Don't jump to conclusions.

Well let me explain further.

My Father ordered a black Canon S110 from Amazon as a Xmas present for my Mother. Just before it shipped he got a customer service message to say that they had no stock of black ones, so the camera that would be sent would actually be silver.

When she opened it on Xmas day the colour of the camera on the box was black, as was the marking for the contents, rather than White or Silver that they also do.

The camera inside was a cheapo older Canon camera with noticeable scratches on it.

It's the fact that the email was sent to say that it would be a silver camera instead, which suggests there could have been some deception by a staff member.

I agree that it could have been a case of somebody returning it with a different camera inside, however somebody at Amazon looked at it. They don't need to know much about cameras to see that it looks vastly different, the colour is wrong and had it been returned, everything relating to it says it is black.

Either way, not good.

oh noes people got frisked!

I remember back when I worked at my dads warehouse there were occasionally random bag checks to make sure none of us were stealing and I got searched a few times.

this was back in the 90s though maybe things have changed now days ?

DO ocuk employees ever get searched? someone could easily stick a few thousand pounds worth of cpus into one of their pockets etc.

I'm pretty sure every retailer has a warehouse where they ship goods from. They've gotta make sure goods are not stolen.

How does that suggest it was stolen by an employee? Sounds more like a returned product re-sold but was failed to be checked properly before being sent out.

Even if they did try to steal it they wouldn't have even got passed the metal scanner when leaving the warehouse. The workers would be watched like hawks, you'd be lucky if you can go to the toilet. When stuff was discovered to be stolen is was always taken very seriously going as far to search everyones car or being spot checked at the security gate. I've worked for Play and they're practices were much the same as Amazons, they basically copied everything they did. The irony is that the only people who stole stuff there were management bringing in old broken laptops/cameras to be swapped around with working ones and doing 'special deals' for family/friends.

Because of the part about receiving a silver camera instead of a black one, which means somebody at Amazon had to open it. Perhaps they bought the camera in with them, and it would have been noted before in the morning, thus leaving with a camera wouldn't have been unusual.

It might not be the case, but as I said before, somebody at Amazon looked at the camera, not really sure how you could not see that it was incorrect.

If it's anything like their orange Manchester 'competitor' that I used to work for then yes they will be scanned each time they leave the building and if you have a bag then a glance in there to make sure you don't have anything from the warehouse.

It's hardly invasive, it's hardly time consuming and it's fairly logical when you see how small a CPU such as a 3960x is without the box.

Amazon is supposed to be renowned for efficiency - I doubt they'd be employing security people unless they were necessary...

Seasonal workers, from another country, earning a low wage... it would seem like there would be some risk of theft (one of these guys takes home a laptop and its likely doubled the cost of employing him or the security guard for a month). As for holiday accommodation - its a low margin business, they're not getting much utility from each individual worker... accommodation (given that its a a temporary job) is going to be basic and the costs kept to a minimum.

Its hardly foxconn tbh..
