ok i have, 3GB pc2-5300

bank1: 512mb
bank2: 1gb
bank3: 512mb
bank4: 1gb

they are the same manufacturer/brand But my question is,
if i took the 512 sticks out of banks 1&3 and replaced them with 2x1gb sticks
of OCZ pc2-6400 XTC dual channel, would i notice much of a difference?

The ram in it atm is like a value type ram not very great but just want some solid advice on this one. I do play games a lot too

You probably wouldn't notice much difference. The 6400 ram would run at 5300 anyway because all your memory has to run at the same speed. If you wanted more RAM i would take all that RAM out and buy a 4gig 6400 kit (2+2) giving you more, faster memory and 2 empty RAM slots.

3gig is still plenty to run games on. The main reason a lot of people are getting 4gig kits is because of how cheap they are.

Firstly, you will only get to use a max of ~3.25gb unless you're running a 64bit operating system. So if you're running a 32bit OS the extra gig would be useless.

If you're running a x64 OS, then you'll get to use the extra gig, but the new memory will have to run at the same speeds as the PC2-5300. And there's a fair chance that the different brands won't run together.
