Ok I have this set up with domain contoso.com (you wouldnt know I`ve got through numerous MS training kits eh).......it is working fine for mailing between users internally, however I now want to set up users with an Internet domain name email address. I have set up internet domain name to point MX record @ my WAN IP and forward port 25 to mail server which I ahve adn entry in DNS to reflect that it is mail server for *** internet domain etc. I thought it would then be simple to configure an SMTP connector to send email out via my ISP but ti doesnt seem to work.........I *thought* that this connector would present just like a client such as outlook etc sending mail via smtp......hm doesnt seem to work, anyone any advice?

you don't need smtp connector in exchange.
Smtp virtual server is just fine on it's own, it will send mail out using dns lookups.
Your outlook clients send to the mta via rpc and mail goes out through the virtual server using local dns by default directly to recipients.

Firstly thanks for replying :) , do you mean my mail server would attempt to connect directly to any other domain's mail server, and if so would these mail servers accept unauthenticated connections?

wey hey that worked :) I can now send out , many thanks. Now I need to figure out how to send the mail from the internet domain, at present it is sending using my internal domain contoso.com lol...........

an update to this is I have now got this working ok :) , I`m sure there will be some caveats that I am blissfully unaware of , now on to stuggle through the last 5 chapters to get a grip on the important conceptual stuff :(
