Ok which card would perform better...

Card 1: 12pipes 500mhz core/1000mhz mem
Card 2: 16 pipes 400mhz core/980mhz mem

Bear in mind that card 1 has already been overclocked in the factory and card 2 can probably be clocked at least 50mhz faster.

Thanks

Baba

Assuming that 12pipes has 12 ROPS, 12 texture units, 12 pixel shaders, and a 256bit bus and the 16 pipeline card has 16 off the above, then the theoritical numbers would be:

Card 1
------
Bandwidth: 32GB/s
Texture fillrate: 6Gtexels/s
Pixel fillrate: 6Gpixel/s

Card 2
------
Bandwidth: 31.36GB/s
Texture fillrate: 6.4Gtexels/s
Pixel fillrate: 6.4Gpixels/s

So, the numbers say card 2. Add to that overclocking headroom, then card 2 looks more attractive. If it has 16ROPs aswell be better with AA, AF and HDR too.

Thanks m8 i thought it may be the better option.
The 2 cards in question are:
Card 1: HIS Excalibur ATI Radeon X800 GTO ICEQII TURBO 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (RX800GTO-256ICEQT) (GX-044-HT)

Card 2:PowerColor ATI Radeon X800 GTO16 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-055-PC)

Another question.. is the GTO16 an r480 core?

Baba :)

Googling says that the GTO16 is only an r430 core and the GTO is an r480 core.

If the GTO unlocks, it might be another consideration, as it is a bit cheaper than the GTO16

The GTO16 won't clock as well. ~430-450mhz I suspect. My R430 X800 bravo can't get past 455mhz to 460mhz.

HIS won't unlock either. I reckon they'd be about par, when clocked to their highest possible speeds.

I thought sapphire have stopped making GTO2 with r480 cores, but are now instead usin g r430 cores.

The GTO16, for all intents and purposes is a X800XL, and you will see its pretty close to the 6800GS. I would recommend you look at the 6800GS reviews and tailor your needs according to the games you play, and the IQ level you prefer.

Yeah thats what i heard, is the sapphire still the r480 core? If it is its obviously the best choice, to unlock then clock up.

Hmmm descisions descisions! :)

Baba :)

Edit**
Just out of interest lets say i get the sapphire. Is there an app which will tell me what core the card is using? Say the 430 or the 480?

It appears there are still R480 core GTO2 cards available.
But a mate of mine has the PowerColor ATI Radeon X800 GTO16 & has clocked to X850XT PE levels.

So its a tough choice.
Maybe get whichever is cheaper.
