Playstation 3 "gets too hot"

Sony shares plummet

By Nick Farrell: Wednesday 04 October 2006, 07:22

SHARES IN SONY fell after an analyst claimed its long awaited Playstation 3 console gets a bit too hot.
Sony had a few technical hitches at the Tokyo Game Show, according to the Washington Post. Macquarie Equities analyst David Gibson wrote that PS3 units on display at the show operated erratically and had to be repeatedly reset.

He was not sure why the PS3 would do this, but suspected it was due to over heating. Gibson was concerned that such a problem had occurred so close to full production and this was "clearly negative news for the company".

But Sony denied that there was any technical problem with the PS3. It claimed that the problem was caused by the fact that more than 200 PS3s were clustered together in kiosks that concentrated the heat generated by their processors and provided poor ventilation.

Overheating is normal at trade shows, afflicting not just Sony products but those of its competitors. But the markets took Gibson's word and have downgraded Sony from a 'buy' to 'hold' rating so share prices fell. µ

tbh i gotta agree with Sony, thats why i thought it would have overheated.

Didnt do any bad things for MS etc considering they overheat in a cold empty room :p

Whilst we are on the topic of Sony bashing, it seems that another developer is having trouble with Sonys online tools.

The devs on one of the NBA games has this to say:

The only thing that is still up in the air right now is the online
play: Visual Concepts has been trying to work out how online will be
implemented for the PS3. It's been a challenge for them to
include that feature in the game, and their testers have been working
around the clock figuring out how to work the game with Sony's as yet
unannounced network platform.

Shares down 2.75% isn't "plummeting" so the article was indeed sensationalist :)

2.75% is a lot when you take into consideration the size and worth of a company such as Sony.

Anyway, Wii's weren't over-heating, the Xbox360's didn't overheat at trade shows so I don't think it means anything, if the PS3 works fine when I get it home I'll be happy.

heehee thats cos they just used Mac G5's in the background and stuck a 360 box up front lol :D

anyway like u said when it gets home who cares, i honestly dont think the PS3 will overhead much, especially if its as heavy as reports make out, you have got to assume the weight is down to mahoosive heatsinks. and a big fan

I've just bumped into an old friend of mine thats just started working for a company called 'Infoteam International Services' based in cornwall that repairs PSP's & Playstations 2's, they recently had a PS3 sent to their department, I asked him if he had signed any kind of NDA and he said no (he did say he did'nt care if he had anyway), any way, no word of a lie he told me that the console that they have recieved has had nothing but problems, console resetting it's self, not allways powering on, he said that that they have did'nt recieve any games with it as it was sent mainly for them to get used to innards, they have tried to play a few ps2 games on it, he named Grand Theft Auto San Andreas in particular and stated that the game ran very oddly, you could walk through walls, flashing textures etc.

He was quite suprised how intrested I was and said he would try and keep me posted, I'm temped to ring him back up and ask if he can get me some shots of the inside of the console :)

Definition of plummet is a sharp or steep fall. 2.75% does not constitute a plummet :) Just like if it rose 2.75% it wouldn't constitute a sharp rise. Shares go up and down all the time due to news and rumours. The media love to sensationalise things.

lol inquirer are probably just in a huff because sony wont send them one to try

nevermind the sun ,it makes the sport look respectable at good times

the only preview ive seen thats included proof wasnt bad at all.(psm3 one)

Mine operates 100% in a nice cosey room. It has never crashed due to heat problems. Also - I expect sony to have as many problems at launch. It's just a given, it's packed full of complicated stuff - just like the 360.
