Over the past week my car started making a whining sound over 3k RPM, exactly like the alternator was begining to fail.

Today on my route to work I overtook a diesel driver then pulled in and after slowing for the next car noticed I had no power.
I limped the 1 mile of my journey I noticed the temp. guage rise slightly before dropping back to normal.
On my way home the car drove fine although I took it very easy and only accelerated properly twice.
The temp guage was fine but I noticed it took ages to get anything other than warm air out of the heater. It went hot enough after a few miles.
On arriving home I noticed the whining sound has gone.
So new water pump, or something else? If it was the water pump I'd expect the temp guage not to rise and zero heat from the heater right?

I wouldn't have driven it that being the case.

Could be several things tbh, first off HGF is rare on the 1.8T but at this stage i'd check the expansion and oil filler just to make sure running it hasn't caused any issues.

Could be the waterpump impella has come off, won't be total failure of the pump or drive belt since its driven by the cambelt and if the waterpump bearing is indeed on the way out you will know about it in a big way!

I had a noise comming from AC / Aux belt which sounded like a whining, however as expected this caused to loss of heating issues.

When was the waterpump last changed?

Any limp home lights come on the dash?

Expansion tank is clean (well pink), and about 1mm below min. ( i think it's been like that for a while)
I just put half a cup in to bring that back in.
Oil is mayo free.
Waterpump has never been changed.
Just started the engine now while it's still hot, engine temp up to 90 but climate control didn't want to blow hot air.

No warning lights.

can you get the codes read to see why it went limp?

Perhaps but I was under the impression if there was fault code then I would also get a dash light.

Anyway it's booked in a garage on Tuesday. I'll share my girlfriends yellow C1 until then, going to miss my old Seat.

Will report back.

Me? Its a 2000 mk4 golf turbot, motronic me7.5 ecu, so hardly low tech, only seen it throw a light when I drove a few miles with one dead coil pack
