Ok im on the verge of applying an extremely large hammer to my computer please can some one help me!

Im running Windows Vista Ultimate 32 and im trying to play some games. No matter what I try the games will always crash to desktop or the display driver will stop responding.

Now orignally I kept having nvlddmkm has stopped responding blah blah blah. and games would just freeze and then eventually BSoD with something about nvlddmkm.sys. I seem to have got round this problem, but now games .exe's just crash. It will be fine through the game menu's and setting them up etc, but 5 mintues or less of game play and I get thrown back to the desktop with 'game.exe has stopped working...'

I have checked the event logs and this is what I can find:

Faulting application cfs3.exe, version 3.0.0.21007, time stamp 0x3da20044, faulting module nvd3dum.dll, version 7.15.11.7519, time stamp 0x482e068c, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x002ebe04, process id 0x15dc, application start time 0x01c8e4f1cc864714.

If you need anything else to work out this problem please just ask and tell me how to get it and I will.

Thanks

As recommended by BFG try this:
Craig,

One thing I strongly recommend is preforming a "driver scrub", you will need the following:

- Driver Sweeper (http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1655)

- NVIDIA Driver 175.16
(http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x64_175.16_whql.html)

Once you have these programs you will need to go either through Add/Remove programs and uninstall the NVIDIA display drivers or via Device Manager. If you are unfamiliar with how to get into Device Manager, simply hit start and in the search bar at the bottom of the start menu, type "Device Manager" and select it from the results. Locate "Display Adapters" and right-click on the card, under the "Driver" tab select uninstall driver. Accept the reboot and boot into Safe Mode (F8), once full booted run the Driver Sweeper program for NVIDIA Display, and run the installation for driver 175.16.

Additionally, I recommend installing SP1, if you haven't already.

Thank you,

That's what they recommended when I was having a similar problem. It didn't help me though as mine is a hardware issue :p

try running with Administrator rights, if you have a shortcut on desktop for the game, rightclick icon then >properties >advanced and choose the box to run with admin rights.

Its a driver problem, not a vista problem.

cf33.exe is running then the problem is with nvd3dum.dll.

Mattey1 looks like a driver error, try some different drivers

thats exactly what I thought at first so tried using some older drivers from my cd, then with some I downloaded a while back, 169 I think, and most recently with the latest one today.

I will try what you say now craig and mr grouse and come back to you!

hi again,

I have tried the two solutions and neither have worked :-( although the driver sweeper kept crashing and didnt appear to be too stable either.

This is really annoying, all I wanted to do was play some games. Im missing something here. and cant figure out what it is.

Is it possible to run some stress testing programmes to check for system stability, ie mem-test & Prime 95 or Orthos.

Rob :)

I ran memtest for 8 hours over night and it hasnt reported anything. although the memory was stating it was running at 430Mhz and not 667Mhz as it is supposed to.

I have tried changing the timings on the motherboard but that didnt affect the results in memtest, would this be causing a problem?

Any overclocking at all? Tried it on stock? Latest drivers for everything (not just the GPU but the motherboard / sound card / etc)?

Full Windows Updae? SP1?

I get this error with my ATI card, the game never crashes just flickers then comes back when i quit i am greeted with a million of the baloons say the display driver has stopped responding but was recovered sucessfully. using Vista 64 SP1 cat 8.6. Really annoying

Ok, I have done the one thing that should have fixed it if it was a problem with the system and re-installed windows. some problem exists :-( what could this be?

If it's continuing between installs and driver sets, it points to your hardware.. your graphics card could be causing the NV drivers to fall over? Have you checked the cards temps?

Have you over clocked your gfx card ?

I have been back and checked the temps and they all seem to be ok, but I did notice that the temp i was getting on the sensors i've put on the GFX is reading 65C I havent checked it when it crashes mind so will have a look.

everything else seems to run at a reasonably low temp, mid 30's to mid 40's across the board.

The north bridge has the RoG's cooler from ASUS on it and am un willing to take it off to re-paste it but maybe this would help.

Whats a good GFX cooler to replace the stock bfg one?
