ok ive been reading lots of threads on here and other places and people say that you need loads of Vram for games like bf3

BUT

on another thread in a diffrent forum someone put a screen shot of thier Vram usage and so did others some people were using gtx580 with 3Gb of vram and it was using 2.5Gb of Vram (some of these were screen shots of the MSI afterburner and other programs that monitor this sort of stuff and this was at a higher res than 1080p). Others were using just 1.5GB of Vram on a gtx570 and had everything maxed out and was getting good fps while others couldnt.

plus someone said that if you use all your Vram then it takes it uses your RAM

am i correct in all of this or have i got my infomation wrong?

also based on this i was thinking of buying a gtx580 with 1.5Gb of Vram but other people told me to go for 3Gb of Vram but the 3Gb of Vram cards are more expensive and not sure if i could strech my budget that far but with all this info if im gaming on a 24" 120hrz 1080p monitor i should be fine with 1.5Gb Vram right?

You should be fine at that res. For BF3 if you did find you had an issue you'd just drop the MSAA to off or 2x from 4x at ultra.

Personally I prefer the high settings and > 60fps rather than ultimate image quality.

You should be fine with 1.5gig on 1080p, but if your upgrading in the future etc, I'd get 2gig, I run on a 1440p and I struggle on some games with my 1.3gig.

ok thanks for the advice :D im gonna get a GTX580 as i currently dont own a decent enough card to tie me over till nvidia next gen comes out else id just wait till then so ill get 580 now and then sell that and get a next gen nvidia

Of course 3GB would be better but you won't need it.

1.5GB will be fine. The extra VRAM is not worth blowing your budget for.

Depends what games you play and what resolution.

Shogun 2 with 1440p eats Vram like a great white in a pool full of grannies.

you sure you cant hold out till january 9th? thats the latest ive heard on when the new cards are coming out.

as for 1.5GB vs 3GB, the best option is to go for the 3GB. 1.5GB might be alright now, but in the future you really want the VRAM

i dont want an AMD card i prefer Nvidia and i would like to wait for next gen nvidia cards but i currently own a 8800gts so thats not good enough and ill be building a new x79 system just after xmas so i will need a good card then

3gb 580s..
2560x1600 ULTRA with max motion blue and 4x AA...

I use 1480 with my windows tweaks.

Looks like a 1.5GB card would be fine after all.

Hi, what tweaks have you performed? I game at 2560*1600 with sli 580 gtx 1.5gbs and couldn't run Battlefield 3 maxed out because the fps dropped to 30fps with my vram showing 1600mb of usage  in Msi Afterburner.
