So, when I started my latest job last year, tattoos and piercings were perfectly fine and only needed covering if deemed offensive. New 'rules' have now been passed down from Head Office saying that ALL tattoos should be covered and ALL piercings taken out, except ear piercings for females.

Now, that may seem perfectly fine for you guys, but it's not, my ink is on my forearms, a nice Rammstein tattoo with the German Flag waving inside it. Far from offensive. BUT, the problem lies not with the tattoo, but with the uniform. We are NOT allowed to wear a long-sleeve shirt under our work issued t-shirt and a jumper is not offered as there is no need for one with A/C in all stores (this comes from the area manager and Head Office. Even through winter a jumper or fleece is not available as it is not part of the uniform). So, how do I cover a tattoo the size of 1/2 my inner forearm if I am not allowed to wear suitable clothing to cover this up?

Also, why are females allowed to have piercings yet males are not? The head office folks want ALL piercings removed except ear piercing on females, this includes my tongue bar, which, without it, I can't speak properly. The area manager is backing this new rule change, yet HE has piercings in his ears, commented on one of my piercings and went and got the same bar in his scaffold. How is this even fair?

What can I do, other than leave this poor place of work?

If they are forcing you to cover up and you have to wear a uniform they have to provide suitable clothing.

Explain the situation with your forearm tattoo, that you need to wear a long sleeve under your work t-shirt unless they supply long sleeve work t-shirts.

The piercings, just take them out.

How can you not talk properly without a bar in your tongue?

If you want to have tattoos and piercings you have to make peace with the fact that you might run up against things like this. And not whine about it.

The tatto they should supply you with a suitable uniform or allow a long sleeve top, the tongue bar and piercings you can just take out. Surely you'd get used to not having the bar and talk better as you do?

Quit and start looking for a new job. I feel that if this gets resolved we wont have our monthly Jaffa work woes thread.

I would say to the manager . What should I wear to cover my arms.

Yep its quite simple

Tell them you need a long sleeved shirt and take out your piercings? You can uncover your tattoo's and pop in your piercings when you finish work surely?

Should have thought about about the implications it would have on your future employment prospects when you had the tattoo. If the rules state you have to cover it and your uniform doesn't allow you to do so then looks like it's time to find another job.
