I stumbled across this on YouTube:

Despite having listened to rap for 21 years, I've not listened to any Mos Def before. I like his flow, anything else he's done I should check out?

EDIT: Just realised that I should clarify that Mos Def goes by the name Yasiin Bey these days.

Wow, i don't really like rap, find it too much about smackin hoes and crap like that.

But this is actually pretty awesome. I only really like the Rap style like in the OP, so if anyone knows what that is called (sub genre) that would be sweet.

Thanks for sharing.

It's alternative hip hop. Proper hip hop in my opinion. Mos Def is associated with the Native Tongues Posse which was all about black positivity. Arrested Development were another hip hop collective in the same vein.

3 Years, 5 Months & 2 Days In The Life Of... got played out in my house in the early 90s.

If you like that type of rap/hip-hop in the first post then you might like Guru/Jazzmatazz for some mellower type stuff

I am not a big fan of hip hop or jazz but i love the fusion of both of these together on jazzmatazz volumes 1 and 2 (didn't really like 3)

Here is the the complete volume 1 of jazzmatazz

Now that is "smoking" music

Look up Deltron 3030 too, a collaboration or supergroup if you prefer of alt-hip-hoppers. New album out soon too, I hope been waiting since 2007 :p

Listen to Talib Kweli, Common, Kanye West are the main three which I would say are the same type of hiphop as Mos Def.

There is also lots of other hiphop that isn't gangster rap such as:

a tribe called quest, de al soul, the roots, outkast, big boi, gangstarr, KRS one, MFDoom, Wu Tang clan, Hieroglyphics, Del tha Funkee Homosapien, lootpack, Pharoahe Monch, Smif-N-Wessun, pharcyde, dilated peoples. also look for stuff produced by J Dilla.

Then you have your ganster rap such as NWA, Dre Dre, Snoop, Tupac, Biggie smalls, Big L, Big pun, Mob deep, Nas. which is gangster rap and I know I shouldn't listen to i, I can't help it sometimes. The subject matter is bad but they are all good rappers and the music is well produced.

There is loads of great rap, just most people think it is all ganster rap when it isn't. There are loads of examples in the HipHop thread.
