Most Annoying / Broken Controls?

Inspired by my recent rage outs, I thought I'd ask what you most rage inducing controls are. Mine is a tie between two titans of bad controls.

First, the dodge function in Resident Evil 3. This just doesn't work. It does not work. There seems to be no technique or skill in whether you manage to dodge any of nemesis hits which is particularly annoying in several of the boss fights as this can result in a lovely instadeath.

Second, is the use of the R2 button in God of War (HD collection edition for the PS3). This is supposed to be used to open boxed or tapped to activate bits of the scenery. However as the new dual shock controller has a pressure sensitive trigger for R2, this makes tapping it an utter nightmare. My current technique is actually smashing R2 against my knee in attempt to get it to work, which it frequently doesn't. This isn't helped by the precision apparently required to open health boxes... they are obviously there to be used in battle but if you go up to it and start faffing about trying to get R2 to work, by the time you've done it an enemy has already attacked you, cancelling the animation to open the box. It is SO annoying!

Thankfully, a quick internet search revealed that these are not uncommon complaints and have induced rage outs all over the world :D

What about you?

Lair before they patched it to be able to use analogue sticks. Broken game.

Controversial but: Skyward Sword. While it's a wonderful game, but every time i miss an 'angle attack' on an enemy it's because it forces me to use inaccurate motion controls. I can't help but feel my enjoyment of the game would improve greatly if i was allowed to just use a GC controller which is a horrible feeling to have at the back of your mind.

Resident Evil: Survivor was also broken but in a way that made the game too easy. It was an outstanding idea for a game; a FPS combined with a light gun game was totally new and had so much potential. What they did though was make it so that double tapping a button on the gun would center the screen at the nearest enemy instantly. The result of this? Just point the gun at the centre of the screen and keep mashing the button, even the quickest of enemies would then just stay in the middle of the screen.

I can't comment on RE3 but I share your pain regarding the R2 button for GoW1, thankfully they switched it to R1 for 2 and 3 in that collection. I didn't use your knee smash technique but I tried turning the controller back to front sometimes so my thumb had more pressure as it touched the edge of the trigger, this worked quite well! =)

Regarding my own personal experience, playing Street Fighter 4 on a 360 controller (not the new ones with the raised d-pads) was life shattering. The PS3 controller wasn't too bad, I have an arcade stick now so I don't need to worry about either but the 360 controller was just awful. I have a lot of respect for SSFIV 360 pad players :P

Oh my god, the bit with the rolling boulders in GoW-HD, arghhhhh!

Whoever decided R2 should be that button should be shot!

Killzone 2 and possibly 3, didn't play it enough to remember. But i remember having to zoom in by clicking the R3 button, which when you are trying to aim using it already was awful. Iirc you couldn't change it either.

Probably not rage inducing but R2 for knife on BF3 (PS3)...thumbs are on sticks, index fingers on aim and fire, so when someone comes round the corner right infront of me I'm not that quick to reach R2.

Partly my own failings but its one of few points I'd give COD a +1 for over BF.

Not being able to press UP and LEFT in Lego Star Wars when doing the R2D2 flying bits, I almost always died a few times before having to re-assign the left key for a few seconds then reassign it back to LEFT when I'd finished

The cover system in GTA IV was pretty damn rage inducing, it kept snapping you onto random things. For example you'd want to hide behind a concrete wall or a parked card and it would end up snapping you against a nearby fire hydrant or a post box or something equally as frustrating.

You certainly could change it in KZ2

Granted i just don't get it, but ea's skate series.. those dual stick controls.

I got the duals down in fightnight and nhl, but just found them imposabably dificult in skate.

Shame, games good, just couldn't buy the sequels.

When I started playing God of War 3, I found the fixed camera (or rather on-rails camera) really hard to put up with. By the time I'd finished the game, I actually preferred it that way.

Any game that doesn't let me re-map the R1 and L1 buttons to R2 and L2 on the PS3 - especially shooters!!!

Battlefield 3 on PS3. I've given up on the game until they fix the controls; they're simply not as responsive as BC2, and that's saying something considering BC2 isn't the sharpest game out there in the first place.

Every time I play the game I feel like I've had a stroke, as if what I'm doing with the controller isn't happening on-screen in the same way.

The latest RE game has terrible controls and put me right off playing it. I haven't even played past the first place where you have to wait for some reinforcements or something.
