What is the most common bought / used RAM these days, one that will fit into many boards.

Type of Ram, like DDR.

DDR2 because it is cheap, DDR3 is overrated at the moment.

Speed - 6400 upwards.

Can be had for £20 these days.

But you have to be sure that the motherboard can take DDR2. Older boards may need DDR1, whilst the very newest can need DDR3.

Its a dell dimension 3100,

Dual core 2.80GHz CPU if that matters.

Yeah that'll be an Intel socket 775 system that takes DDR2.

PC2-4200 or PC2-5300 will probably be enough, tho PC2-6400 may be just as cheap. You'll likely have to buy some that will run at 1.8v as I can't see the Dell having many tweaking options.

You would get away with this, tho it will probably run at PC2-5300 speed as it needs 2.1v to run at its rated PC2-6400 speed.

Cool, so 1.8v's DDR2 PC2-6400 would be best.

It'll be a little overkill as PC2-4200 or PC2-5300 would be more than enough for the CPU (and probably as fast as the system can run at), but it's usually just as cheap as the slower 2 models.

It wont cause any harm running a higher RAM will it.

Nah. The machine will automatically run it at the slower speed without any issues at all.
