Hi,

My Mum drives from Croydon to Dorking and back every weekday and she is in need of a new car. She's looking for something small, cheap and something that does as many MPG as possible. Preferably 60+MPG and for £6,000max.

She's happy to go second hand but her driving's pretty rubbish so something with good safety would be preferred (obviously!)

MUSTS:
Electrical windows
5 seats
3+doors
Air con
Cheap
50+ MPG
BE AUTOMATIC
CD player and radio.

MP3 connectivity would be nice but not necessary.
I have no idea about cars so any input is appreciated.

i really dont think this is happening OP.

even the latest auto diesels will struggle to get that in the real world...and they'll be way above budget

perhaps a small tin can is what she needs with a petrol engine...fiat 500, fiesta, aygo???

TBH she does under 10k a yer on this run...will a diesel even make proper sense...

Yea Dorking>Croydon return is only 33 miles!!

So about 8500 miles +personal!

Just look for an auto focus around that budget.

You might struggle to hit 60+ MPG on that commute with a car in that budget.

A brand new one maybe but not a second hand few year old model.

So what would you say is the best car. Lets forget about 60 and just see which one is most efficient. I was thinking of the suzuki alto and swift.

We just sold our other car which was a 2007 Fiat panda automatic, had 4 doors, air con pack, front elec windows, CD MP3 player ,did average 55mpg up to 60mpg on a long run, only let down would be a small boot and only a 4 seater if that's not really important

yeh the croydon traffic is a nightmare so i think any car is going to struggle to do this (assuming she travels typical rush hours).

Auto focus.

My mum has a 1.2 Nissan Micra Auto on an 03 plate.

Over 40MPG generally but into the high 50's if you take it easy on a run.

Can't really fault it as a small, cheap to run car.

I seem to remember seeing you can get Seat Altea diesels with DSG boxes for around £6K. They should do the numbers you're looking for easily.

Yaris D-4D, 06 onwards- I'm currently driving around in one as a temp. I've been getting 62 MPG driving reasonably fast, auto, 5 doors. Decent little car. Should be around the £6k mark.

I think i found a couple of cars. What should i look for when buying second hand?
Ill post the links to them when i get home.
