Hey all,

Well getting my PC build soon, http://img90.imageshack.us/my.php?image=finalfinalspecre6.jpg (ended up changing OS to 64 bit...better be worth it!) :P

And i'm wondering what you guys would see as the most essential software/utilities to have / use on the build when its made.

Sort of like the essential utils that can be used to check things work the way they should, i.e temps, stats etc, just overall maintanence to ensure the build is running at the proper spec.

I looked at the Usefull Freeware Utilities thread above, but it is pretty huge and so much there :) Was wondering what people use the most? Ill probably pop them on a USB pen ready for when it hopefully boots up with ease :)

I think that's most of my core apps

There's a few more e.g. Skype, but I know that not everybody uses it.

Firefox with ad block plus
Nod32 anti-virus
CCleaner

VLC
Adobe PDF reader
Winrar
Real player alternative

Firefox + profile before anything else!
Avast
Winrar
Textpad
Adobe Flash

but without the Adobe PDF bloat - Foxit Reader is *much* better - leaner, meaner, faster :)

Firefox, winamp, 7-zip and VLC are the absolute essentials!

Nice cheers guys, have a few of those already, but was just seeing i missed anything major out :) or if there are some usefull tools that are being used, which i haven't had yet that i should get hold of. Should get my parts today :D

i also use filehippo.com for getting these downloads as it has a repository of previous versions of common free apps as well (eg can get earlier version of utorrent etc)

i also like the way their main page has all the apps grouped together in categories

Best one I found before build was Belarc plug in. Very good to remind you of what software you have now, and what you need to make sure you have disks for etc when done. Also gives you serial codes for installed software.

The Belarc plug in? I remember downloading a program from Belarc's site but I thought it was a standalone and not a browser plugin?
The BelArc Advisor program builds a profile of your PC which includes patches, attached hardware, drivers, installed software etc. Good if you are rebuilding your PC.

But as you say its a program and not a plugin?

That is what I was confused about. I thought there was just a Belarc program to run.

hmm...will have to give that foxit reader a bash.

Edit - how does the pro version compare with Adobe's reader? You can get it free...

Edit 2 - no wait you have to sign up to some crap...
