Most important characteristic

Having recently tried a car with radar cruise control I think my next car has to have it.

Really amazing how it'll slow to a standstill if the car in front has to wait to turn off to the right then accelerate back to cruising speed. All without lifting a finger!

Admittedly handy, not something I'd consider a must have

Torque. And Power too I guess. Love a bit of boost.

But it really depends on the car and it's intended use. My daily, for example, needs a bit of speed about it, but also some economy. I can compromise on both fronts though, hence the current daily of a 530d.

The second car, well it depends on why I bought it. My current second car is a 4.0 V8 Range Rover. I wanted something big, so fuel economy was irrelevant. I didn't want it to be excruciatingly slow either, hence the V8. But my second car 2 before it (it replaced a 330i e46 that was bought simply because it was available) was a Passat 1.9 TDI, which was bought for economy reasons. Other second cars have included V8 S4's, Golf GTI's, V6 Golfs. Basically whatever tickles my fancy at the time.

Currently, the P38 is up for the chop again, and depending on what happens with the wifes work situation, it looks like it will probably be another economy motor (Passat diesel estate most likely).

It needs to "pull like a train", innit.

In truth I don't look for one characteristic in a car, if I did I'd buy something either stupidly practical, or stupidly impractical, and neither would suit my needs. It needs a mix of comfort, style, pace, economy, practicality, sporting prowess, handling etc. and then I'll buy it.

Otherwise we'd all be driving Caterham cars or S Class Mercs :)

Fun at legal speeds.

I've only averaged about 3-4000 miles a year recently, so has to make me smile whenever I get in it. Hence the RX8.

Other half had a list of requirements which included, roof, doors, windscreen, boot, some comfort and comparing that to my list of cars pretty much the only one that was left was the RX8.

May possibly have been deliberate on my part. ;)

The "raw" feel of a car. A lot of road cars feel quite sedate, but being able to experience a car that gives you some input that reflects what the car is going through is very satisfying.

Looking understated for what it is. My black octavia vrs blends in with the taxis nicely. If I lived in a nicer area I wouldn't mind having a flashy car though.
