This guy has used PCIE-M.2 cards to split the 16 PCIE lanes in a GPU slot into 4x4 lanes of M2 and then used M2 to PCIE converters to connect 4 NVidia GPU to a 4 way M2 card. Under Linux there is no noticeable impact from using 4x PCIE over 16 but this way instead of being limited by the GPU slots, he "bifurcates" the PCIE lanes to get 6 GPU each with 4 PCIE lanes!
