Don't start looking for the busiest realm, take it from someone who spent weeks looking for the most active realm so that he'd have more people around him as the noob areas seemed too quiet.

The majority of realms have large userbases, just 90% of the population is at level 70 meaning no matter which realm you choose, it's still rare to find a decent group for dungeons at low levels.

The best realms I found were recommended ones as people new to the game tend to choose them and you have a better time levelling.

Take it from me, you don't want to go for the busiest 'not full' realm - many others will have done the same, only for the realm to get queue times after a short time. Also, on nearly every single server, half of the population is level 70, according to wow-realms census. You may hop into even the most busy queue-riddled realm and still find ghost towns in the starting areas.

If you go for the oldest busiest realm, their will be lots of latency "lag", loads of gankers who will camp you, so many guilds that will require you to have lots of experience.

Start on a mediocre sized realm or a fairly new one.

Kazzak says its full, but i can make new characters on it all the time. I would say its one of the biggest English speaking server.

I have to admit, it's a real pity the OcUK guild decided to roll on a PvP server - I was rerolling at pretty much exactly the same time, but wanted PvE only. :(

Anyway, I think you'd be better off with a low-medium population server as otherwise you're just going to hit the problems mentioned above.

Check here and sort them in realm age order.

Personally I'd go for the following if I was a new player looking for PVE

Ghostlands
Hellfire
Nagrand

All of the above have a good player base on Alliance and horde. As close to even as you'll get and all of them have a good amount of mid level players as opposed to the older realms where you'll only find alts in the mid range.

The busiest realm at the moment is Bronze Dragonflight, was recommended over Christmas so it's now chock a block with new players and regularly gets queues at the weekend and evenings.

in the queue for bronze dragonflight :p, just wanna see how busy it is thats all.

You honestly won't see a difference. Populations are concentrated at level 70, in Outland. You won't find lots of people running around doing starting quests as you spawn your newly built character into the game.

Low level people are actually far less commonplace on full realms - while all the high levels remain. In fact, you will find that the full realms often have the highest concentration of level 70s compared to the other level ranges. It's around 70-80% level 70 on full realms compared to 40-50% level 70 on medium/recommended realms. It's all in the reasoning behind making such characters, and keeping such characters.

You may even find that with the exception of Orgrimmar, everywhere else on Azeroth is ghostly deserted.

edit: if it's a new realm over Christmas it may be a different story

But bronze dragonflight was reccomended over christmas so its full of new players apprently, anyway doesnt matter, its locked you cant make characters or anything, im sticking with shattered halls for now.

This is why I much prefer playing smaller mmorpgs with all the players on one server. It's so frustrating not being able to find a party in a game with 9 million active subscribers.
