I know this question has been asked before but I just cannot find the thread what are the best cards from the most recent and last couple of gens that can be run from PCI slot power only?

My mate has a pc he just wants to upgrade but the PSU isn't gonna be able to cope with a card that requires much power at all, its only a 300w HP jobbie.

So he wants some sort of upgrade, if onhly a PCI powered card will do.

Suggestions anyone please?

The HD7750 is the fastest commonly available bus powered card ATM. The GTX650 also seems to have power consumption too,but for some reason the current models have a PCI-E power connector, even though it could probably be bus powered. The HD7750 and GTX650 tend to trade blows depending on the game. However,in the next week there should be more reviews of the GTX650 released and the TechPowerUp ones isolate the graphics card power consumption.

thanks guys, what sort of cards from last gen would match these roughly with just PCi power as well just to widen the options, he has about a £50 budget max really

Speed wise, there isn't really anything. PCI-E-only (ah yes note the -E, PCI is something totally difference...) limits you to 75W and so that leaves the 5770/6770 out of the loop, so the only 40nm AMD one would be the 6670 which is a lot slower than the 7750 but the Asus HD 6670 1024MB GDDR3 PCI-Express Graphics Card just about fits the budget.

But the DDR3 version is a lot slower than the GDDR5 version so I think those cards are more useful for hybrid crossfire with AMD APUs.

The 650 has power connectors probably because they couldn't be bothered to design a card with out them. How ever if you want to oc the 650 it does require the power connector.

From all accounts the 650 costs more and performs worse. Still it does explain why the GDDR5 version of the 640 was missing. It's been re-named 650.
