Hi,

I am after a laptop which is a cut above the average.

I will be playing the latest games, editing video and more basic uses as well. A 17 inch screen is a prefference.

I have looked at Alienware UK and there are some tempting models when you upgrade all the components. I am also looking at the Dell Precision M6500 again putting the top components in.

I am not price sensitive and I am prepared to pay top $ (or £) but obviously don't want to spend unnecessarily.

My favourite at the moment is the Dell. Here is a link to the upgraded spec. It costs about £6000. It looks damn cool and seems like an unbeatable spec.

The upgraded spec is here: Dell Precision M6500

Is it over priced?
What would an expert buy (in the UK) if cost was not a restiction?

Thanks.

I could be wrong, but aren't the Quadro series cards mainly used for professional CAD design and not so good for gaming?

Yes. I think your right. But apparenely they are equally suitable for direct x games. Or at least that is what the Dell guy told me.

Thanks for your comment.

i wouldnt listen to dell if theyre talking about games....they dont tend to know much.

im pretty sure the quadro GPU's arent great for gaming...

quadro would be best for CAD and graphic work, but the geforce gpu's or the mobile ATI ones would be best for games......you gotta compromise somwhere

Agree with above, it's wise not to trust the opinions of someone with an interest in selling you said item. It's also wise in general not to trust what Dell's representatives say :p.

That amount of money is totally unnecessary.

If you have it to burn, some bad ass clevo based monster laptop is probably the order of the day for you. Do a search for UK resellers.

I think you could get a great machine for far less though, I paid just over one grand for a g73 from usa and that's playing everything I throw at it, hd video work it blazes through. Maybe an msi also would be suitable?

If you are intent on spending that much, at least wait until Sandy Bridge laptops are available. As it is, you are looking at spending £6000 on a laptop with a CPU that will already be a generation behind current tech by the time it is delivered to you.

Clevo.

Sandy bridge + SLI GX485M

Basically it will perform like a desktop equipped with sandy bridge and two GTX460s in SLI (slightly downclocked).

For that budget you can grab a couple of SSDs in raid 0 and a bluray writer.

Such a machine will blow anything currently released out the water, so I would wait.

plus has dell even fixed the 6500 series throttling?

I have never had a clevo machine throttle on me, I cant count how many dell models throttle when gaming

Dell Precision is out then

Yep, thanks for the comments. The Precision M6500 is definately off the possibles list.

I think I will wait as advised.

Thanks to everyone who has commented so far. My first time on the forum - good experience.;)

There is currently a sager with GTX485M and the current Sandybridge or a Eurocom machine with a desktop Core i7 hex core and SLI GTX485Ms.

Wait one sec... why are you looking at spending £6000 on a laptop? What exactly do you do that could possibly need so much power? A laptop will never be as powerful as a desktop so I would advise spending £1500 on a laptop then £1000 on a decent pc.
