Most Quiet "Current Gen" Video card?

Hi, not that long ago I upgraded from a reasonably quiet 8800 gt card to an ATI 4890 XT (while they were going cheap).

Fast, but this thing is so loud and so hot, even while on the windows desktop, so I have decided to get rid of it and get a quieter (and possibly cooler) card.

I don't care if I even lose performance and downgrade for the same money I get from selling the 4890 - what is the quietest card of the "new" generation of cards 5xxx ati series or nvidia equivalent. I realize there are passive cards from past generations, but they are weak in performance and high in price.

Thanks

Judging by reviews, the Vapor-X version of the 5750 runs a few decibels quieter than the regular version, so I imagine that the Vapor-X 5770 due in stock tomorrow will be an excellent and quiet card with performance not too far off the 4890.

My 5850 is very quiet at idle - fan speed autos to less than 30%. It is audible under load but it's not significant really. I was pleasantly surprised put it like that.

Why don't you keep the one you have and change the cooler to an AC Accelero(Takes up 3 slots instead of 2 though) , or a Zalman(Takes up 2 slots) http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-032-ZA&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=787 and save yourself a fortune. You can adjust the fan speeds in ATI control panel. Make sure you get a Zalman VRM heatsink as well though.

Either of these ideas would = win. Depends on how much money you want to spend. Selling your 4890 and buying a vapor-x 5770 will cost about £50-60

Buying a cooler will cost you...the price of what you buy.

Your choice :)

Thanks for all your help! I'm too old and grumpy to start replacing coolers on cards, sounds like a lot of hard work. So it looks like the Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5770 Vapor-X is the way to go, that's about the maximum I was looking to spend, pre-ordering today :)

Hopefully a quieter/cooler pc (that uses less electricity?) will result from this!

I have the same card and stuck this on it:

and havn't regretted it. Card is now quiet and cool.(in both senses):D

Oh and 5770 is coolest and quietest of the new gen and best 'bang for buck'.
