Most shocking thing you have learned about your ancestors?

Mine died in the famine and emmigrated, like the rest of them.
White slaves, not mentioned too much in the glorious histories of the world, indentured I think was the term.
Enough survived to spawn me.

Related to an ex prime-minister on my grand-mothers side, not sure which one.. Dad died recently so not really got anyone to ask anymore.

Not shocking but my grandfather shot down several german planes in the Battle of Britain, lived to tell the tale as well

My great grandparents were millionaire land owners, with huge swades of land in Wales and Sussex and lived in a great hall in North Wales. My grandfather, who I never knew, was recently interred in the family crypt there.

Unfortunately for me, that same grandfather ****** away all the money and there was nothing left to pass on.

I knew none of this until about a week ago. I was more upset about finding out I am 1/4 Welsh worse than the fact my millions in inheritance got blown on cars.

My great uncle was the subject of a front page splash of the daily mirror in the 1960s as when he was in jail for armed robbery he managed to convince a woman to leave her husband and kids and wait for him to get released.

Wasn't the first or last time he was in the papers after getting himself in trouble. Family only ever mentioned him in hushed tones but a bit of research dug out what he'd been up to!

Found out a couple of years back that my grandmothers family are descended from the kingmakers in Ireland. They would crown the new king (with a shoe).
