Afternoon all,

Does anyone have a full list of what's checked in MOT's for a car?

I've got a proper old banger (Astra MK4 Bertone), it's a commuter so I've given it absolutely NO TLC and it's MOT is due, and I figured I'd just give it some love this weekend, so ordered oil, fuel, air filters, oil, new plugs, all new shoes (one is almost at the marker and another is in a bad shape. Also, the front bumper had a run in with a pole and the bumper support bent in so the front bumper doesn't sit too well. So I've also ordered a support bar. Front wheel bearing will also be replaced this weekend.

The passanger headlight is... Well, it's crap, the glass is yellow and nasty. The drivers is fine.

I need to fix the washers as it recently developed a fault, block in the line I think. Sounds like no liquid to the motor, as the motor spins up fine, the liquid is in the res. So, self explanatory really.

So yea! The poor thing really has been neglected. I'll be a busy bee on Saturday morning sorting all the above points but it's well overdue.

I just would like a list to make sure none of it will cause fail/cautionary.

Thanks!

Thanks, the test on the lights is pretty rigerous... Maybe I should just go ahead and buy replacements, new bulbs will give MUCH better illumination in the later months anyway...

Hmmmm

Aye Phillips extreme or biggtbreakers dude.
if yer running age old bulbs will be a noticeable difference

Aces, nice!

I've decided to try and clean the lenses of the headlights before commiting £50, as said. This is a budget commuter. Cheap as chips 2 door Astra Bertone 2004.

BUT, I will be replacing the bulbs regardless as at the moment the current illumination is no better than a lit far in the daytime.

Try visiting scrap yards, online ones charge the earth, I picked up a full electric mirror unit for £20.

May be less faf than sorting the light depending how bad it is, if the glass front is ruined a fancy bulb won't help you.

As others have said you can check 99% of mot checks yourself by just methodically going through the list on the official website.

Before you go stripping down or buying anything for the washers try sticking a pin in the nozzle while someone is activating it. My Astra G is a pig for the rear screen washer blocking up. it could be similar for your headlight washers.

Noiceeeeeee, will try, think I did already.

When they're blocked, does the motor struggle? As mine sounds fine. The Astra G is pretty identical aside from door count.

I had a look yesterday briefly and the motor location is a pain in the arse to get to.

The motor can struggle as it's effectively trying to pressurise the tubing due to the blockage. It may take a while to clear which is why you need someone activating it while you poke it with a thin pin.
