Just had my car fail its mot :(

Just wondering what the next steps are for the failure.

no1

Emissions are to high, i havent got the fail sheet to hand. But im thinking of buying that "stuff" you put in your tank and supposed to help with emissions....

no2

Front brakes are not balanced. Offside is pulling a bit. I have never noticed this, but hey it failed on it. I am going to strip out that side and see if i can see any obvious problems. Im thinking of doing new disc's and pads?

So would new pads, discs and that "stuff" be a good start?

I gave it a blast before mot as well, to get it nice and hot.

If it matters, car is 1.8T GOLF MK4

Thanks

Just strip grease and reassemble existing front brakes (caliper slides etc) that'll cure the brake imbalance (assuming you don't have a caliper on the way out)
As for the emissions, is your engine management light on? if not yeah stick a bottle of that stuff through the fuel, usually works ok. If it doesn't then I suggest getting a diagnostic check done to see if there are any sensor gremlins lurking that havn't yet triggered the light on.

The car has gone from being used daily, to being used maybe once or twice a week. So sticking caliper is a good hit. Didn't think of that DOH.!!!

Nah no emissions light on, would vacuum effect emissions? As i found a slight split in a small vacuum hose. But it was too late to fix it before mot. So bodged it with tape. But covering the hole, doesnt make the car idle any better or worse

I'd be reluctant to fit another until you find the reason that one has died..
Or your well spent wonga wont last long.

Or do what most people do, keep a cat for MOT time only and run it decat for the rest of the year.

Prob age has killed it. Its 11 years old the cat.

Plus i have been running 250-350bhp through it via a side exit exhaust. So no doubt this has killed it. But its just strange for it to fail one year by loads. But it down to the cat.

And yes once the mot is done, its coming off and running no cat what so ever :D

I would ask friends and family if they know a friendly tester? One that will possibly forget what car his moting and will put it in one with a cat! It sounds like your golf has a decat? We need more pics and specs of this 350bhp?

Well it must have cat, the exhaust is one big bodge. I admit that.

Spec wise

its basically had this fitted, all bar a few parts

http://www.backdraftmotorsport.com/shop-vag-1.8t/1.8t-150/180-to-325-big-turbo-kit/flypage.tpl.html

but i didn't use my 150 block, i went for an audi block 225 bam code.
I will take some pics, when i get it back from mot :( Its not been on the road 5 minutes :(

When you say the exhaust is a bodge what do you mean? Litterly hanging off or just because it hasnt passed it's mot test? It sounds like it will be good fun at 350bhp! Bet it's a bit keen on the front tyres!

No no no lol, its just loads of small pieces of ally pipe all welded together to make the exhaust up, out the side if you get me. Ie side exit exhaust.

Maccy has seen her. its a chav car, coz of the exhaust and rear lights.

Let me see if i have a video

will sort the video out, its when it was running decent power :D

side exit :D

Yeah its fun tbh, but it needs all sorting out now. Prob running around 250bhp. As i/c is suffering from heat soak badly!

But i have sold me bbs ch's and using the money to get her sorted. Its going back to standard looking. So its a bit more of a surprise. But with 16's on it fun ;)

Yes its got a cat deffo, been poking it about tonight, theres nothing in it. BUT i didnt do the exhaust, i hope its not a decat ffs..

Well i am wanting an APR exhaust but thats like nearly a grand :o But if i get the APR exhaust and inlet, i should see close to 400. But i have been advised not todo that otherwise the engine will deffo go BOOM.

Boost wise, its not a lot really, its about 25 peak and 22psi hold. Which is not a lot really for the size of the turbo.,

Dont mate. Not even funny at the Moment.

Paid to have cambelt done, cv boot, service, failed mot on cat, number plates and brakes.

Went over to pick up cat. And missed a gear change. 3rd to 4th.

Had to have car towed over to garage. And I think I destroyed the engine.

It's cost £800 up until now. And well I dont know what todo

Just trying to find pics and videos before the mob comes

This is with S8 MCO number plate and 18inch BBS ch's which i sold to pay for conversion. i took coilovers off, due to going back to sheep in wolfs clothing stance ;)

didn't the whiplash from the rev limiter give it away?

Edit - Doesnt make sense so re wrote lol

Right was cruising along ;)

Coming up to gear change to go into 4th.

Acc down/Clutch down.

Put into fourth (thinking its in 4th)

But wasnt in gear, just in kinda neutral

Power down, car lurched forward as if i had put brakes on. looked down needle (revs) off the clock.

Boom,

Well it was if I did emergency stop. There was like real a really high pitched whine a bang. And oil from the bottom of engine. Put that down to a seal gone?

It doesnt start at all. Just span really fast for a few seconds then would attempt to turn over.

There wasn't a lot of oil. The chap who towed it. Tows clamped cars. As it's the only person I could think off :(

Found out what the damage is yet?

Well just got back from the garage, the complete engine is out :(

They Called on Tuesday and the news i got was awesome

Basically, i have put a rod through the side of the block.

He actually laughed when i said is this bad.

He said i must have put it into 2nd at around a 100mph (private road ;) )

Since then the damage is this, as they took apart the old engine.

Rod through the side of the block.
20 belt valves
Damaged pistons heads
CLUTCH smashed to pieces!!!
Dual mass flywheel is damaged (don't know what that is)
gearbox RATTLES!!!!! He thinks teeth have been taking off.

So basically, i cant afford another BAM coded engine, last one was £1500. This is what the conversion is based on, as i had an ARZ engine (chocolate engine)

So i am paying £800 for an engine and gearbox, and £400 fitting. And it will be a standard golf again.

I then have the option of fitting the turbo, manifold, intercooler, ecu etc etc etc on again. Or selling it.

Oh and to top it all off!!!

i have to pay for an MOT re test!!!
AND
They have broken my £200 induction kit :(

So all in all fantastic news!

But i did save £90 as my car is a 2000 model and i dont have to get a type r103 approval cat :D

EDIT

The only thing that doesnt make sense. If i put a rod through a block, why didn't the car lock up front wheels and skid???? As i am assuming the engine would seize up? And then wheels? Or is that because the clutch blew to pieces?
