MOT Failed.. advice needed.

Hi,

MOT failed on quite a few things today (most are minor) but two things that still need addressing are:

"Nearside rear road wheel bead rim badly distorted"

"Nearside rear wheel bearing has excessive play"

Now I know I should've asked what exactly that means at the time and how much it costs etc. but I didn't want to be taken for a mug by the testers and its closed now so was wondering if any of you had an idea of cost?

Did a bit of phoning around and it seems that not many places can 'fix' distorted rims? :confused: What would be the cheapest way of addressing this issue? Must I buy new alloys?

Secondly, the wheel bearing problem.. does this mean the bearings have gone and I need to replace it.. or does it just mean the wheel needs tightening on securely? :D
 
Your Alloy is knackered. Buy a 2nd hand one.
Your wheel bearing is knackered. Get a New one fitted.
 
Looks pretty self explanatory to me :confused:

"Nearside rear road wheel bead rim badly distorted"

The wheel is knackered - have you hit a kerb or pothole? If it's a steel wheel you may be able to hammer it round, otherwise it's replacement time.

"Nearside rear wheel bearing has excessive play"

Wheel bearing is knackered. And given that it's on the same corner as the knackered wheel, you've almost certainly hit something and that has caused both problems. Rear wheel bearings are generally cheap and pretty simple to replace. Sometimes they can be tightened, but really, just fit a replacement bearing.
 
I understand him asking.

My sister took her car in for an MOT and the guy said she needed to have her headlights re-adjusted because they were dipped too much and it was going to cost £40 or something.

I rotated the switch that moves the headlights up and down on the dashboard and took it to another MOT station :rolleyes:

Cool, but when I asked the guy at the repair place (not the MOT place) he said 'bearings are cheap (£10-20)' but 'fitting is expensive (~£60)' so around £80 total :confused:

Hmm.. one of the 'minor' things I failed on is nearside/offside front headlamps aim too low -- I'm sure I've fiddled subconsciously with one of those flickity swithces in the front of the car at some point :p. It's a Corsa btw - I take it this can be fixed myself then?

I'm going to put the old 'steels' back on - they were left outside for a few months though and as a result theres a bit of a rust build up - most of which I've scraped off.

Apart from the rust (of which some is still visible), these should be ok right? Or would an MOT fail on rust ridden wheels?
 
They will be fine if the tyres are still ok. No perishing, tread over 2.5mm deep etc
