My aging 306 (98 XSi, 85k miles) has failed it's MOT today on the following;

  • Nearside front subframe mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded
  • Offside front subframe mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded
  • Nearside front track rod end ball joint has excessive play
  • Nearside front suspension has serious deterioration of the bonding between metal and flexible material of an upper support bearing
  • Nearside front brake hose twisted (found during steering lock to lock check)
  • Brake load sensing valve linkage seized
  • Nearside front windscreen wiper does not clear the windscreen effectively
  • Offside rear tyre tread depth below requirement of 1.6mm
  • Service brake efficiency below requirements (RBT Service Brake Efficiency 41%)

The garage that did the MOT doesn't do welding so couldn't give me a price there and then. Does anybody have any ballpark figure as to what all of the above is likely to cost? I know the ballpark prices of the obvious stuff such as the wiper and tyre but it's the others I don't have a clue about.

Given the age of the car, is it really worth it? I only use it to get to work but do need it for that as public transport isn't a practical option.

As above - get rid as spares or repairs. Basically the front suspension bits all need replacing, plus the subframe needs fixing and some brake bits.

My '95 DTurbo needed all the front bushes replacing after 60k. I got rid instead of paying £hundreds to fix it and that was worth £6000 at the time, not £300.

That makes no sense - why would you get rid of a £6k car just because it needed about £300 quids worth of work

Traded it in against a new car. Not like it scrapped it!

I'd had it a couple of years and fancied a change. It needed that work plus a cambelt change service so the total would have been well over £600.

So you didn't just get rid 'cos it needed a few hundred quids worth of work

I love it when people included all the relevant detail

Don't rolleyes me sunshine!

I'm not going to argue the merits of a decision I made 10+ years ago as it'll just drag this even further off topic.

why dont you shop around for the cheapest garage to do the work ? if the price is too high then you can decide what path you take

Lets see.
Welding - depends HOW corroded we're talking!!
Track rod end £15 - fitting £30
But you'll need a wheel alignment afterwards £60
Top mount from scrappy £20
New brake hose £20- fitting £30
But you'll need the brakes bleeding and some fluid too another £30 labour and £10 for a bottle of fluid
Unsieze the load valve or buy scrappy part again £30 fitting - £60
A should amagine by this time you will be into needing a brake pipe and some unions replaced as that's never going to come un done without at least one of the brake pipes being too corroded to undo. :D
Another £10 for pipe and union. £30 fitting- More brake fluid etc
Ooh a wiper blade from Halfrauds £20 - fit it yourself you lazy bast :D
Pair of rear tyres £150 fitted
Service brake imabalance means either a front caliper is siezed, your brake pads or your discs are worn out.
New discs £75, pads £20 and some abuse on the calliper or a scrappy part £40 - Fitting £60 and yet more brake fluid

All total guesstimates obviously.

The welding is going to be the most expensive part of that, like the others in this thread I can't see it being cost effective to get that fixed.

Take it to a garage with the list of fail items and see what they quote.

Thanks for the replies. The garage gave a ballpark of £400, they need to let the welder see it to I've exact price, not worth it really.

Looking at a replacement car today. We buy any car are offering £105 for my 306! The dealer will give us £250 trade-in and they'll just scrap it for us. Wife's got her eye on a 407, any thoughts on these?
