Grrrr.

My car has failed on a few things, no problem I think, get it sorted at the weekend with a little trip to GSF. Ask how long I have for a free retest? "Sorry Sir, no can do since the new computerised system". Its because they now have a list of things that qualify for a retest if they fail. If they are not on the list they have to book a full MOT on the computer again and this takes 30 minutes of their time. So another charge is due, ok its half the price of the first MOT but what a joke. Is this another way for the government/garages to take more money? :(

it was a free retest for me last year if I could get the car back to them within 24 hours,as it was just a simple light fault I did it in time

I like the new MOT system, I can get my free tax disc online! :D

But no, I've had no problems with it - even when the vehicle wasn't registered to me, had the incorrect engine numbers and a slightly off chassis number, all was altered, corrected and re-filled within 30 minutes! Lovely!

You're meant to be allowed to fix a lot of things it fails on and get a retest but you need to do it on-site apparently.

Under the old system it was always been the case that if the vehicle is taken off site then you lose the right to a free retest (although many garages still gave them anyway). One day I was bored and read all the small print on the back of my MOT certificate :p

As yet I've not had enough exposure to the new system to fully understand the ins and outs of it but the MR2 goes in on Friday and lets just say that for the first time in my life i'm actually making an effort to try and pass first time :p

Free retest on the old system was at the garage owners discretion.

There is still a free retest on the new one but only for very simple failures (ie bulbs etc) but if you turned up to an mot without even checking your bulbs then you need a kicking anyway ;)

PS its not the garages fault, you need to look further up the chain... :(

I believe it's an attempt to stop dodgy garages from issuing MOT's to any old bange which slips them some coin. As it limits the number of cars they do in a day. I could be wrong though..

Indeed, it is all about making sure the garage cannot do 50 tests in a day when they can only actually do 10 (or similar)

I have a friendly MOT place, we know the guy quite well and he used to do the MOT's at the drop of a hat. Sometimes we would have a very 'fast' MOT... ;)

Now since the new system even he has to book us in, we have to wait a day or two and he always does the full MOT because the computer tells him how long it should take and he cannot do anything else until that time has elapsed (so he might aswell do the MOT!) So far we haven't had a fault, so I don't know how he is going to deal with that..

i like how ford do it, they do a pre mot check, so that any obvious fails they wil point out to you before you have the test, you can then sort them or arrange for them to be sorted beforehand so it passes first time.

I don't like Ford, they tried to rape me for £500 to repair my car after a failed MOT, managed to get all the repairs done and re-mot from another garage for £100, obviously depends on the ford you take it to though.

thankfully mine was just an mot being paid for by them due to them screwing up the mot when they sold me the car :D
wouldnt of touched them otherwise!

I asked my local garage to explain this (via email) they said:

I asked about the Free Retests

Hi Ian,

Now the systems are computerised, things have changed.

If your vehicle fails on something that's classed as an restricted item, i.e. Tyres, Wiper Blades, Windscreen, Bulbs, Emissions etc (anything that's non mechanical) then you are offer one working day free of charge, if the vehicle fails on something that is not classed as an restricted item i.e. Brake Pads, Brake Pipes, Exhaust etc then you have 7 days at £19.95 - car or £22.00 - van.

If we carry out the repairs at Ausden Clark then we will waiver the re-test charge.

I can now confirm that technology is good and even in the hands of the government it works sometimes.

Just got back from my MOT on the MR2 (Passed no probs) and within 1/2 hour of the certificate being issued I was able to buy my tax online and the system acknowledged my new MOT.

Now I just need to wait for good old fashioned royal mail to screw it all up and lose the tax disc in the post :p
