MOT Question

As long as you want, just don't use it on a public road.

Yup, you can leave it as long as you want afaik... but dont risk using it on the road (Apart to get it to the test centre... duh)

afaik you can only drive a car after it's M.o.t has expired if you are booked and on your way to an m.o.t test.

car failed its MOT today because one of the suspension struts has leaked all its oil out.

What shall I do? Source the parts myself from Renault, buy upgraded parts, get the garage to buy the parts for me? Help!

what car is it? get a price from the garage, from Renault and a breakers yard. I wouldn't go for an upgraded or aftermarket part unless you replace all 4 shocks (struts) or at least the pair. I don't know how much a new shock is for your average Renault but for my Civic I wouldn't expect to pay more than £40 for a new stock one.

172 front shocks, relatively speaking, are cheap as plus nothing wrong with them really (apart from their tendancy to leak after a few years :P ).

I'm in exactly the same boat with the same car :)

So I've bought some eibach pro springs and will be getting new shocks all round, 99% sure it'll be standard renault items unless there's a good deal anywhere on some Konis. Been quoted 168+vat for both frotns and rears using standard renault parts.

Does anyone know if the police can actually tell whether you have an MOT or not simply from automated camera's as they can with insurance?

Its really angered me, seeing as I need the cambelt, 24k service, front and rear pads and 2 front tyres.

I think I will ask the garage to just source 2 new front struts renault or non renault. I cant imagine 172 struts being any different.....I hope?

I ******* hope not, cos I will be screwed.

Cambelt @ 24k?

It'll be 72k or 5 years, as I think I remember his to be a mk1 172 it'll be needing due to 5 years.

Although beest to change early on these engines. It's also a nice £500+ from Renault lol, with a 24k service I'd be expecting to pay £350-£400, which would include the full £120 cam kit from renault, from a specialist.

Standard Renault shocks as said aren't too pricey, bilstein also do some oe dampers which some have said are even cheaper plus they are bilsteins which is always good, just trying to get a part no now.

They can now the mot system is computerised. It was one of the main reasons for doing it.

Thats not generally the case now but its certainly their aim to have all cctv cameras everywhere recognising numberplates and issuing automatic fines for a variety of traffic offences.
At present I think each force has just one camera car but the operation/scheme is self financing so they'll need more revenue from fines soon

Yes they can - this is the idea of the new computersed MOT system.

Has anyone been stopped and had their MOT checked in this way because last time I came across a camera car they were asking me to produce still, they only had tax details.
