Anyone else think this needs to be reviewed? 3 years from new and an MOT is required. IMO this should be amended to be mileage as it's dead money as far as I'm concerned. Car had major service 1500 miles ago with no advisories etc in February and has 19k on the clock. £x for an MOT in my case is just dead money.

Personally I think any car under warranty i.e. Toyota (5 years), KIA (7?) and mine that's a Ford extended affair (6) while it's being serviced annually at a dealers should be exempt?

Thoughts?

Judging by the state I see some new cars in, MOT tests should be done from 12 months onwards. A car can still have failures that are missed by services, I think it's a bad idea.

I think 3 years is fine, i do think the price of an MOT could be reduced though.

That's just goofy owners mind. A car is expected to be in roadworthy condition every day of the year just not MOT day ;). Tyres close to the limit would flag as an advisory, does not mean that a year after the MOT was done they would be fine the following year.

Thing's like suspension damage, damaged wheel bearings, cuts in brake lines due to stones are life threatening failures that can happen from the moment you drive out the dealers.

I agree above that it should be yearly starting straight after the car is sold. Dealer servicing would probably pick all of the above up if the mechanic had time to check them, if the workshop wasn't busy and if they were competant. I'm not saying an MOT tester is more competant than a dealer mechanic but he is looking for the same things day in day out.

There were proposals recently to move the MOT in the other direction - every 2 years.

Mileage isn't the only thing that causes parts to degrade!

Aye, some people only do a few thousand miles a year - if the MOT was every 20k miles they might go 4-5 years between tests, likewise if it's every 10k miles some people would be having 2-3 MOT's a year.

At the moment the yearly (after the first 3 years) seems a reasonable compromise, as it at least means most cars get a semi proper check at least once a year.

I think an annually from new as stuff like wipers, tyres and brakes can wear quickly and well within the current 3 yrs till MOT. This would elso help to prevent people driving with illegal tyres etc on newer cars, not that i know whether it is a problem as such, but some people would more than likely leave them as long as they could get away with it. However, maybe just check the essentials for the first 2 years and charge less.

Taxi's and other private hire vehicles have to have an MOT at 1 year old and onwards, the only possible change we will see is Class 7 (transits, sprinters etc) changed to after 1 year old too.

Any fault can develope at anytime regardless of age or how careful u drive.

I think taxis or any public vehicle should have MOT every 6months tbh.

Look at all that poop buses chuck out when they pull away that is shocking.

Personally I think it should be every 12 months but the first two should be done free of charge by the dealer (obviously this will ultimately be passed on to the customer in the initial purchase price).

Any car can fail an MOT regardless of age or mileage.

The price is getting a touch high now though (although just found out yesterday when booking my Golf in for an MOT and service at the dealers that they do the MOT for free when done at the same time - win! - and they even collect and return the car for me, with a wash and vacuum - more win!)

Erm....you know they are big diesel engines right?

So what? Pumping out loads of suspended particulates in urban/populated areas where buses run is totally backwards. The stuff which is worst for people in greatest quantities where the most people are

I can't say I've noticed the buses round here pumping out a load, but regardless they shouldn't be allowed really, DPF should be compulsory IMO.

MOTs should be every year from new. For instance its shocking how many reps cars are on illegal tyres, I notice this so many times when stuck in traffic and nothing better to do! Not to mention the number of people who will go along with dodgy headlights or brake lights until the MOT is due.

As for dealer services I would not trust one to do the bare minimum correctly i.e. change the oil, let alone assume that they have checked the condition of anything safety related on the car. So keep testing yearly but start the timer from new.

Most cars that are less than 3 years old still get serviced every year and so any problems should be seen and rectified then.

A MOT only proves that the car was safe on that day, it does not mean that it will be fine 6 months later.

The MOT system is fine, peoples education on how to look after their cars...well that needs a review
