MOT Testing

From the 1st of March, here in NI a new test was implemented which involves the car to be tested at maximum rev. Bacially, the inspector gets in the car, puts his foot to the board and lets the car rev as hard as it can, lifts foot for a few seconds and then floors it again.

Now, a chap went in the other day to get his car tested at my local test centre and when it came to this part of the test, the inspector asked him, if he agreed to the test and if he didn't, his car would automatically fail the test. So he said yes as he didn't really have a positive choice.

Anyhow, this new test blow the guys engine resulting in the guy having his car fail the test and the car left with a blown engine.

What do you think of this test as I for one wouldn't fancy it done on my car especially a diesel car?

Diesel cars emission test requires the car to be floored anyway mate..
 
What do they do about cars that cut the max rpm when stationary? Having rev'd the CTR a few times at the lights (;P) I know the limiter cuts in at about 5k if that, way short of the top end.
 
If thats how its designed then I guess thats how its tested, sounds like Honda anticipated stupid government tests.
I take my car to red every time its warmed up so I wouldnt be worried but it'd finish off a few older cars I think, especially classics :eek:

Can a NI car be mot'd on the mainland and its valid still?
 
Even if you do have a rev limiter it's hardly a good idea to bounce off it!

What if the engine is cold? That'll do no end of damage

Boy I'm glad not to be living in NI!
