MOT time soon, the garage have asked me to take along my previous MOT certificate and log book.

Is this all I need to take (the car aswell obv!!)?

Hoping it'll go through first time, can't beleive it costs £50 now though

If it's just the MOT and not a service (and i'm guessing you aren't taxing it after as you don't mention it) then all you actually need is the car. If you are having it serviced and then MOT'd you'll want to take the log book to be stamped.

Before you take it check your lights, you'd be amazed how many people turn up with a blown bulb or similar. Also consider taking it to an MOT testing station and not a garage, testing stations have no interest in in failing as they don't shaft you for repairs, at the same time they aren't going to put it through just for the sake of it like some places.

Take your old MOT as it makes the job easier for the inspector. Take a pack of fags with you and get them out on arrival. Also ask if there is a T machine and offer to get him one.
Then move right away from him and the car and let him do his job without you rambling on or getting in the way.

They can do that on ramps without taking the wheels off and risking a snapped wheel stud. As far as I know, MOT centres aren't actually allowed to remove anything from the car to test it. Therefore, if you have a large rusty hole on the underside of the car, cover it on bodge-tape (duck tape) and it'll go through.

That was my general understanding anyway (and why a number of old vans / trucks drive around with tape on their outer wings)

They ask you to take the old MOT as they can run the certificates contigously if within a month of expiry. ie date is Jan 1 and MOT expires Feb 1. If car passes new MOT will run from Feb 2 to Feb 1 + 1 year.

If you don't produce the prior cert MOT will be dated from test date.

Had pre check today and front nearside wheel bearing is shot and needs replacing.

Getting that done tomorrow morning and test is in afternoon.

Only bodywork corrosion that could cause injury to a pedestrian/passer by needs to be made safe. Underside corrosion does not need any gaffer tape or anything on it.

However, if it's within 30cm of a suspension or steering mounting point, or is otherwise sufficient to compromise structural integrity, no amount of gaffer tape is going to stop it failing.

Things like sideskirts can hide a multitude of sins however. The outer sills can be rotten away to virtually nothing under the sideskirts. If the tester can't see it, he can't fail for it.

If the MOT has less then a month to run and you take the current MOT certificate in the new one will runs from when the old one finishes, not the date the mot took place.

Passed first time. Even with my apparently illegal HID kit :p

Emissions took a couple of attempts to get it through, only one advisory:

"No rear seats fitted at time of test"

Thankfully he didn't comment on the lack of door cards, rear carpet, plastic trim etc :p
