Mother in law didn't notice mot was due, it expired on Saturday, she's booked it in for Monday.

Do you get an automatic fine..? She's not driving it until taking it to the garage on Monday.

You only get fined for driving a car without a valid MOT. The exception to this rule is you can still drive the car so long as you're driving it to the garage to be MOT'd.

You'll be fine, as long as it's only driven to the MOT centre and not for anything else.
Just don't take it up the shops or somewhere silly and no one will bat an eyelid (Also, unlikely to run into any traffic cops on the road these days, anyway).

Just another bit of reassurance - she'll be OK. No problems at all driving it to the MOT center.

No problem at all driving without an MOT either tbh. Know of countless people who have unknowingly driven for quite a long time without MOT and never been stopped. Also know of someone who was pulled over for having a light bulb out, car also had no MOT or tax on it but the police didn't even mention it. We reported him numerous times for having cars without tax but the authorities didn't seem to be interested. Thankfully he did eventually get caught driving one without insurance and they were interested in that.

If you get pulled over, your on the way to the MOT ;)

But assuming you pay the tax, you could only go a year before you notice since you wouldn't be able to tax it without a valid MOT.

People get away with far worse now due to the lack of traffic cops around. No to long ago I saw a guy riding an un-licenced (no plates etc) moped wearing a cycle helmet. Also a guy absolutely hammering it around the B roads where my parents live on some kind of road adapted snow mobile. Can't have been legal and it made a hell of a racket. But the chances of being caught are so slim people don't give a crap :P

I had a bit of a mental mix up a couple of years ago and drove a car for about 5 months without an MOT. I had it in my head it was due in Feburary, tax wasn't due till later in the year - so didn't think about it.

Anyhow, long story short - I realised - immediately went ringing out garages to find one that had a space that day, and got it done.

As luck would have it, the very next day I got pulled over on the motorway by an ANPR equipped police car. And fortunately, I had the valid MOT certificate still in the car from the day before. Phew!

I should have bought some scratch cards as well.

I missed an MOT by 2 months, bad disorganisation on my part. Luckily the car was not used in that time, but it was parked on the road. Soon as I realised I booked it in and got it done.

you can drive to a pre-arranged MOT appointment, or to a place of repair to have items outlined on an MOT fail sheet, rectified, without a valid MOT.
