On Custom PC mag issue 52 it reviewed abit IP35-E. it said it had a doggey bios and increased FSB didn't see to have a increase in performance. but looking through some threads i see it was recommended a lot... in the other hand the issue also reviewed the gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L and they said it was great, it was able to overvolt CPU, Ram, Northbridge, FSB and it was able to reach stable FSB of 480Mhz.

so i was wondering which one to get?

I was quite surprised by that article it has to be said.

I got the P5K-C which was highly rated by CPC a few months back.

I have to say, it's a great mobo and a snip around £80. Since it's a combination board, it has DDR2 and DDR3 capability. Since I only upgrade my board once every two years, it's a good choice as it gives me the option to upgrade to DDR3 without the expense of changing the mobo.

Plenty of BIOS oc'ing otions too. Although not in the same league as ROG, it's not that far behind.

It looks like an awesome board supporting the 1333MHz CPUs and at a bargain price of around £50.

The trade off for the low cost is RAID which it doesn't support. So if you don't intend on running RAID, then the GA-P31_DS3L is your board. Otherwise, i'd look elsewhere.

RAID and performance have always been the subject of debate. It depends on what you want your PC for and the amount of cash you are prepared to spend because you will need two identical HDDs.

On my recent build, I've opted not to install a stripped array (RAID-0) as I saw little performance gains in games etc from my previous build. That said, RAID1 (mirrored) is an option if you want redundancy.

That said, having a RAID controller available gives you the option later should you change your mind.

The Asus P5K-C I mentioned earlier has RAID and DDR2/DDR3 support and is a fine all rounder for the price :)

Nothing wrong with any of the IP35 range from abit in all honesty. My IP35-PRO has been without a doubt, the best board I've ever owned, and I've owned a lot of mobo's.

Problem is that there are just so many at the moment. In particular, the P35 range which offers a vast range of extras, overclocking options and cooling solutions etc. I went for the P35 P5KC purely because it's a good overclocker and comes with the DDR3 option. For a little more I can get a wifi edition and better better chipset cooling etc.. which I don't need. So it's down to choice.

i may go for that board in the new year when i build my new rig, unless the X38 boards drop in price then i will get one of those
