My mother has an old samsung laptop that is no longer powerful enough to even play facebook games. She said her max is £400 and it will be used for general browsing and playing facebook games.

Any help is appreciated as I'm not very good with speccing laptops. She said she doesn't want a dell laptop for some reason. Probably because there actually good.

Edit: One that comes with as little crap installed would be preferable as I'll be the one to have to clear it out.

Does she really need a new laptop or would a reinstall of Windows help? I've helped a fair few people out by doing this, saving them hundreds.

I think they all come with scrapeware these days. I think it's a pretty generic market at that price point, I got one for my mate at Christmas and he got a pretty decent spec for that price, so you'll be able to get your mum something good.

As to brands I wouldn't be able to advise I'm afraid.

Sounds like the cooling solution has come loose, or there's dust inside the laptop. You could see if you can get into it and see if you can clear it... might be worth a throw of the dice.

Exactly, if it's for the bin you might as well spend half an hour on it. Get the case off and I'll bet the fan vents will be full of compacted fluff causing the CPU to overheat and the laptop to freeze.

Oh, something you could try is getting a dual core laptop, with 4GB of memory and putting an SSD in it yourself.

You don't need to worry about warranty as you can just take out the drive they ship it with and fire it back in if you need a warranty repair.

It'll fly with an SSD in it and you should be able to get it all for 400.

I was looking at an Acer 5750 with an i3-2350M, 4GB of RAM and 500GB HDD but thats £380. Didn't know laptops were this damn expensive.

Also it's a facebook game thats maxing out the CPU so I've opened CPU-Z and HW Monitor on the laptop while she plays it for a little.

What about something like this - Toshiba Satellite C660-1LD - Core i3 2.53 GHz - 4 GB Ram

You can pick that up for about 350, and put a 65 SSD in it.

A 60ish GB SSD wouldn't be enough for all the **** she hauls on the damn thing. She also has no idea how to delete or copy/cut things so I'd get sick of her shouting me downstairs all the time to delete stuff.

Is that Acer laptop a good price or?

As I said I'm no expert, but the Acer laptop is a good price for what you're getting, in my opinion, I've had a look around and that's about right. It's got more CPU power than the slightly cheaper one I linked.

Checked the laptop and it hits 71 degrees at full load. Not quiet hot enough for it to clock down. Also CPU-Z reported it running at 1.9 so no issues there.
