Motherboard and processor upgrade.

My computer has been running a little slow recently and I am looking to update some parts of it and was hoping for some good recommendations.

I use my computer for almost everything (browsing, gaming, video editing is my thing) but I have started coming across issues while video editing. Specifically with play back as my preview keeps lagging and every so often the whole software buffers. I haven’t come across any major issues while gaming – I don’t tend to play anything recent, mainly stuff that’s a couple years old.

I actually got my PC second hand from my dad and he upgraded the graphics recently, so that is not something I am too worried about but I do know that the Motherboard and CPU are at least 5/6 years old and I currently only have 4GBs of RAM memory and I know to do successful video editing I am going to need more than this.

My budget is fairly low but I am flexible.

I don’t know the specifics of my spec but this is what I can find via my System Information.
• Motherboard: Intel DG41RQ (Sorry I can’t be more specific than that)
• Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E7500 @ 2.93GHz, 2926 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s)
• RAM: 4.00gbs

I am not too worried about what processor is recommended but I would prefer it if my motherboard stayed as INTEL with additional wifi capabilities would be good. I would be happy with 8GBs of RAM but if the price is right I am willing it increase that to 16GBs.

Just fyi – I am a novice when it comes to hardware components so I am mainly relying on good recommendations. If anyone needs any clarification of what I currently have just let me know.

Thank you.

You could look at an i5 + 16GB RAM, or preferably for the editing i7 + 16GB RAM, however that can end up quite expensive

What are the rest of your specs? Graphics, PSU, case?

Hi and welcome to the forums :)

Yup, that gear is now a bit long in the tooth. Assuming you don't want to wait for Skylake (bearing in mind that it will cost a premium when newly released - I wouldn't bother tbh) then you're looking at a good i7/i5 setup.

You haven't mentioned budget so I'll post a couple of ideas:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Asus X99-S - Intel Core i7 5820K Six Core CPU & Motherboard Bundle ***£30 Saving*** £524.98
1 x TeamGroup Elite 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 PC4-19200C16 2400MHz Quad Channel Kit - Black (TPKD416GM2400HC16QC01) £129.95
Total : £664.52 (includes shipping : £8.00 Ex.VAT).

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-UD3H-BK - Devil's Canyon Core i7 4790K CPU & Motherboard Bundle **£15 Saving + Gigabyte Free Upgrade ** £399.98
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan RED 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLRED316G2400HC11CDC01) £99.95
Total : £509.53 (includes shipping : £8.00 Ex.VAT).

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-SLI - Devils Canyon Core i5 4690K Bundle **£12 Saving** £277.98
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan RED 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLRED316G2400HC11CDC01) £99.95
Total : £387.53 (includes shipping : £8.00 Ex.VAT).

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4460 3.20GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £154.99
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan RED 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLRED316G2400HC11CDC01) £99.95
1 x Gigabyte Z97P-D3 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £63.95
Total : £328.49 (includes shipping : £8.00 Ex.VAT).

All the above will offer a significant improvement over your existing gear assuming (and this is fairly important) your power supply is up to the task and you have a regular ATX case. The cheapest spec can't be overclocked either so bear that in mind.

Hey, thanks for the suggestions. After posting I did start to think more about what I can afford my budget to be and I came up with up to £350 which I realise is a little lower than your recommendations. I haven't had a chance to go through them all at the moment but I will get around to it tomorrow and let you know the rest of my specs too.

Thanks for the speedy reply though!

Firstly thanks for everyone’s suggestions. It has really helped me get a grip of what I am looking for.

So my revised budget is up to £350 – I don’t particularly want to spend too much more considering I am only upgrading certain parts.

As to a couple of the things brought up:

Graphics: Gigabyte GeForce GT 730

PSU: ATX-500w-24p (I hope this is the right information)

Case: I have an ATX. It's pretty big - I think a standard size for a tower. Also, I am not too worried about changing this as it should all fit.

I shall also add that the only other things I have as part of my computer set up is two internal hard disks – one HDD, one SSD.

Most of the suggestions given were for 16BGs memory – which is great but is adding to the price a little. I was wondering if it is possible to reduce it to 8BGs but have the motherboard compatible for potential 16BGs upgrade.

I hope all this additional information helps.

Thanks!

You'll be fine with 8gb of RAM and providing you stick with standard full sized ATX boards you'll have 2 spare RAM slots to fill later.

I suggest a decent i5 - go for the 'K' variant as they can be overclocked ridiculously easily. Bear in mind that if you do overclock you'll need a better cooler than the stock one.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-SLI - Devils Canyon Core i5 4690K Bundle **£12 Saving** £257.98
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan RED 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLRED38G2400HC11CDC01) £49.99
Total : £317.57 (includes shipping : £8.00 Ex.VAT).

It will be much quicker than your existing gear and allows for future upgrades.

That sounds perfect - it's exactly what I am looking for and in the right price range. And thanks for the help because otherwise I would have ended up buying something that wasn't compatible.

=)

Hello again,

I just wanted to check something before I completed my purchase -

I was planning on reusing the heat sink currently in my computer. However, I have come to realise there may be a compatibility issue. So I wanted to check that out first.

My current heat sink is Intel E33681-001 which I think is a 'socket 775'. On the specs for the Gigabyte Z97X-SLI it says 'LGA 1150 socket'. If I am not mistaken some heat sinks are compatible with several motherboards - but I just wanted to check if mine would be or if I should get a new one?

Thanks.

No need. The i5 processor in the motherboard bundle is a retail version, which comes with a stock CPU cooler that is compatible with the Z97 motherboard. It works just fine to cool your CPU. You might want to buy an aftermarket aircooler if you plan to overclock that processor though.

Oh cool - thanks that's useful. Will I still need to thermal glue it together though or will it have done that too?
