Motherboard and Ram for 9800x3D

looking for a motherboard and ram for the 9800x3d, currently looking at these two, but leaning more towards the MSI as it doesn't share pci lanes with the GPU slot

for ram I am thinking about going with 48GB or 64GB, overkill at the moment but I'll keeping this PC for sometime... my last CPU/RAM has lasted me 10yrs!

If you don't care about USB4, you can also look at B650E/X670E.

If you don't care about USB4 or PCI-E 5.0 graphics, you can also look at B650/X670.

Seems like a high price for 48GB, when you can get 64GB for £10.

I know its cas 40 but the x3d chips are not affected by low cas as the regular non x3d chips.

Is the RAM overkill?

It is bazooka level overkill, but what are you going for? Topping benchmarks, or just 95%-99% level of performance? If the latter, you can get a 64GB kit that works fine for the 9800X3D for £200.

I'd be telling lies to you if I didn't say it's because it's gold coloured, never took performance into account.

64GB C30 looks like the logical choice here though, and as ProStreet said, the Trident isn't EXPO either.

There's a memory scaling article for Zen 5 on TPU, if you haven't seen it, though the X3D CPUs are usually less sensitive to frequency.

How does this look. I don't see value in 5.0 NVMe's, so I'll be recycling an old 512MB Sabrent 4.0 as a boot drive and sticking with the same GPU/PSU for the time being.

Yes, the RAM is overkill. Tests have shown that the 9800X3D doesn't benefit from faster RAM. Once you hit 6000 CL30, then there is no advantage to either increasing the frequency or decreasing the latency. So you can save a lot on the RAM with less than a 1% reduction in performance.

The 870 boards are expensive and unnecessary. Gigabyte seem to be doing very well on motherboards at the moment.

the Nova is out of stock everywhere, which is why I was looking at the x870 MSI Tomahawk

tomahawk is a good mobo. if you don't want a led debug display just drop to the Asrock x870 riptide wifi...same board as the steel legend...if you don't mind white then get the x870 rs wifi...1st time white boards are cheaper than black
