During the exam period of this year i was lucky enough to pick up a phenom x6 1045t 125w version cpu for £40 (sold as faulty, arrived with Tim on the pins, all it needed was a clean)
So after i got it, i tested it on my old asus-m4a88td-v-evo am3 board, and decided to do some suicide runs and see what the max i could bench it at (stock of 2.7ghz and a locked multiplier)
My motherboard was a bombsite, it has had loads of red neck fix'es including heatgunning and stuff. but was generally stable if the chipset was downclocked, so there i was at my mates house testing it on my old board (i donated to him)
And BAM! it booted at 4ghz at 1.47v core, and not only was it cinibench stable (scoring a massive 7.1points) it was prime stable and stable for every day use (couldn't get any higher though)
But that board needed to be replace due to a lifetime of abuse.
First of all we decided on Asus Crosshair III Formula.
IT arrived and was seemingly fine, but we started experiencing freezes whilst at stock clocks. after we installed windows we had a right job getting to the 4ghz. and it always seemed to get to little more than 3.5ghz and stop posting. but due to the freezes we got a refund on the board.
We then moved to a sapphire PURE Black 990FX. This board was epic, and high end, but upon trying to over clock it i suffered the same issue... 3.5-3.6ghz at a push and it would stop posting. Ive checked all chipset and memory speeds, also tried throwing more voltage at it, but its having none of it.
The only one thing of the top of my head is ram slots, or the fact his ram is mix and match lol.
Im going to try my ram in his system soon, but other than that i dont see why the asus board witch is much lower end clocked so much better stabley, where as both the high end boards fall over at 3.6ghz lol.
anyone got any ideas!
EDIT:
tried my ram, no diference. Sapphire Trix gets really confused and software overclock is not an option.
Tried changing ram slots and since, nothing changed
getting really confused
though im trying to hit the same cinebench score of 7 points that i got on 4ghz and at 3.4ghz i have 6.00 so i may have a chance of nearing it. but probably wont break that as i con only get 3.6ghz max lol
