Hi

I've just added 2 more GB of RAM (so 4gig in total), Corsair 2048MB (2x1024MB) PC-3200 400MHz DDR, to my MSI K8N Diamond - SLi motherboard
( http://www.trustedreviews.com/mother...Motherboard/p2 )
without having the desired result: I need to edit/playback HDV footage in real-time.

Therefore I will also have to upgrade my cpu of my current system. Since I have no idea about processors , could you please tell me which is the fastest possible cpu that I can use with the above motherboard?

the cpu that I have at the moment is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual

many thanks in advance

Sckt939 with Nforce4 chipset, hmm, think you're going to have to upgrade the board to AM2+ for a phenom chip or LGA775 for a core2Quad along with some DDR2-pc-6400 memory sticks in order to make easy video encoding/decoding.

You dont specify exactly which CPU it is, but this is the link to the others that would fit, if any of them are a noticable step up speed wise you'd benefit, if not, then as said you'll need to look at a new system i'm afraid

No he has a skt939 motherboard, these are AM2 so they wont fit.

OP, with that skt the best available is a X2 4800+ ,unless you count the FX

series, I dont know which cpu you have now but even if an X2 3800+ you

wont see too much improvement. I suggest an upgrade to quad for what

you want to do.

Hey annapanagiot,

welcome to OcUK forums! :)

upgrading on an expired socket with an over-priced CPU that gives you little improvement isn't cost-effective either.
I agree with Tetras!

annapanagiot, Socket 939 just cannot compete with Intel® Core™ 2 at this time and although the overhaul of your old system requires more effort the results would be certainly worth it (i.e you will have a big jump of processing power!).

You can sell of your older kit to offset a large chunk of the upgrade cost!

upgrading is Definitely the way to go, i went from a 939 3800x2 setup i tried adding the extra 2gig of ram as well and didnt see much improvement. But when i jumped up to a core2duo setup i was amazed at the Performance increase, and it didnt cost to much because i got my parts second hand and i sold of my old parts to get some cash back.

Your Athlon 64 X2 will sell for a decent amount of money atm. just have a look around and see how much it will cost you i was surrprised when i did.
