Motherboard/CPU issues = frustration

Hi all,

Having some very frustrating mobo/cpu issues. I'm pretty green when it comes to this sort of thing, so the solution's most likely very simple, but thanks for taking the time to read this anyway.

So, I recently bought an MSI 945G-M4 Rev 1.0 mobo and an Intel C2D E6600 SL9S8 to pop in it (these are replaacements for my old asus mobo and intel cpu which were running Windows 7 from the hard drive - the same one I'm using in the new build). The only problem is that it doesn't work. No boot, nothing whatsoever except fans.

My old CPU works perfectly in it and I can access the BIOS etc so I can tinker about, but as soon as the new CPU is in there the system is dead as a door nail. I'm pretty certain it's not a CPU issue, as I've tried 3 of the same E6000 cpus in there and none worked. This CPU has been tested in a friend's machine and runs wonderfully. It's not a mobo issue, because I can use other CPUs in there.

I've tried flashing the BIOS but every time I try. I just get an error that reads: "ROM ID incorrect", which is strange because I've tried every possible combination and followed every tutorial and guide I can find and nothing seems to work.

Seriously spent hours and hours before finally resorting to coming on here and wasting all of your time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as being painfully poor, this is my only machine.

If I've not provided enough info, let me know what you need to know and I'll try my best to answer.

Pure stress at this dead end.

I would suggest heading over to the MSI forum as they have a BIOS flashing tool that works great, it works from a usb stick if you have one, other than that as you kind of know it's a BIOS issue I cannot suggest much more.

What is the exact model of the board and where did you get the new bios from? 945G-M4 does not sound like one of thier part numbers. Did it come out of a branded computer?

Although it might be very similar to the one that you linked it does not seem to be identical. This could well be a custom board made for a volume manufacturer, which is why the ROM ID comes up as incorrect when you try to flash the BIOS.

Are there any other numbers on the motherboard that you can find that might help narrow down exactly which board this is?

Edit: I just found a forum post in Google cache that suggested these motherboards were used by Packard Bell. If this is the case for your board then you will need the BIOS issued by Packard Bell for the board. You might find that pretty tough to get if you don't know what model of PC the board was taken from. If I were you I'd return the board to the seller if possible as it looks like it's going to be pretty hard to find a BIOS that will let you run the CPU.

I suspected as much.

There are some noticable differences between this mobo and the one I have. The seller linked to this board and in my naivety, I thought it must be the same.

I'll have a go and see if I can find the BIOS, if not it won't be difficult to return the board.

Thanks for all the help.

I've browsed online and can't seem to find a single instance of this BIOS.

I don't suppose anyone knows a resource?

I'd rather not have to go through the process of sending the mobo back if at all possible.

First step is to find what desktop model the board came from. HP stores BIOSes under sp numbers so you have to find the proper product page for the item you want a driver/bios for.

See if there's any other identifying serial numbers etc and post them here, along with details of the current BIOS version.

It's always possible though that HP never released a BIOS for your processor. They tend to change hardware often to the "latest" model rather than release lots of updates for a single platform. For instance I think that the DC7600 model might match your motherboard but they only updated the BIOS for Pentium 4 for that by the looks.
