I'm after a P2 system. I play a few games but don't need it to be cutting edge. I only need a mobo, CPU and RAM. I'm after something which is good bang for buck. I don't have a firm budget but it's certainly not unlimited.

I'm leaning towards a P2 system as they seem good value. Quad core would be nice but tri may be ok. I'd prefer an SLI capable mobo. I will certainly be overclocking. I will need at least 4gb RAM.

As I will be buying RAM, is there much benefit in DDR3 now or should I just stick with cheaper DDR2 and spend the difference on a higher spec CPU?

So I'd welcome opinions on mobo, CPU and RAM please. Thanks...

In order to go DDR3 you'll need an AM3 mobo, so then an AM3 P2, which works out at around the same as AM2+ setups. But the ram is where you don't save. But DDR3 would be good future-proofing and will last a good few years more than if you go DDR2. But you compromise CPU speed (though not a lot) by going with the AM3 P2s which aren't yet as powerful as the P2 920 / 940. You can't really go wrong with either tbh..
