Howdy,

It seems my trust i7 920 & Gigabyte ex58 motherboard are on the way out.

I have a GTX970 arriving this afternoon morning and figured now would be as good a time as any to upgrade.

So im some recommendations.

I use the pc mostly for 1080p gaming and also photoshop/office work.

so not looking for anything top end.

was looking at the G3258K as a CPU but not sure what mobo to go with.

You've got a fast GPU arriving - don't hobble it with that CPU. It's a cracking little budget chip, yes. When paired with a budget GPU it can make a great, low cost gaming PC.

The lack of Hyper-Threading might not hurt much now, but you may well regret the purchase in the future.

Get yourself an i5 if you can afford it. If you can't then make sure you clock the absolute nuts out of the G3258 CPU.

£250 on gpu and £55 on CPU
do we see a problem there? if your budget is maxed i was say drop the gpu to a cheaper one and up the cpu to an i5, a none K i5 will be faster than an G3258K.

or get used again if your budget is maxed, i got an 2500k for £80.

Spend a bit extra and get the i5 4690k you won't regret it.

Also what's up with the i7 920?

im not sure if its the CPU, yesterday the pc went into sleep mode and wouldnt wake up so had to switch off at the wall.

this morning when I turn it on im getting mobo error's (b8 & bf) and cant get into bios. No idea whats wrong it.

I was gonna say the same. Seems a bit unbalanced buying a brand new high end video card then buying the cheapest CPU. Surely an devils canyon i5/i7 is a much better match for that video card?

'Sleep mode' = The graphics card dying meaning the screen went blank?

Possible it died, but I'd let your PC go into sleep mode and then see if it behaves the same.

yeh ill let have a nap and see what happens.

but it went to sleep and wouldn't wake up.

when I put new graphics card in it booted up no problems.

+1 for Z97 + i5 4690k + 8GB RAM
nice little after-market cooler + overclock CPU and GG

will probably be the last 1080p setup you ever need before 4k becomes truly mainstream.
