Bought a 8800gtx and was going to wait till the intel price cuts or see what the penryn chip holds to upgrade the rest of my system.

However i don't think my pc is really doing the card justice and it seems to be getting a little old and groggy (freezes, bit slow at loading stuff sometimes). so i want to start over with a new mobo(sli)/cpu/ram/reformat e.t.c. ready for the penryn chips but with a mediocre cheap cpu that i can have a bit of an overclocking project with till then (i can hardly get any extra juice out of my x2 :( ). I have a sythe inifnity cooler so would preferably like a motherboard that will fit that.

don't really want to go over £250 for the 3 parts.is it doable?

give you an idea of whats available:

Gigabyte GA_P35C_DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 & DDR3 Motherboard £81.99 (£96.34)

Intel Core 2 Duo E2160 "LGA775 Conroe" 1.80GHz (800FSB) - Retail £54.99 (£64.61)

Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-5300C3 667MHz Dual Channel Kit (BL2KIT12864AA663) £67.99 (£79.89)

Sub Total : £204.97
Shipping : £8.25
VAT is being charged at 17.5% VAT : £37.31
Total : £250.53

Not sure if any of the Nvidia chipset will support penryn (it only says 1333FSB support) but a P5N-E, E2140 and a 2Gb Crucial Ballistix 5300C3 can be had for a bit more than £200, enough to tie you over untill the price drops.

Just under :p

will that mobo take the penryn chips though? i like the look of that cpu, as it offers 4mb of cache and ive heard it overclocks very well to at least e6600 speeds. I would also like to squeeze an sli functionality in there (although odds are i will never use it, but i like to know its there :p )

lol i realised just after i posted, changed the mobo to 1333FSB and ddr3.

May want to change ram, up to you.

is that ram you quoted any goog for overcloking?

ok maybe im being optimistic. Lets up the budget to £300.

cheap cpu that i can overclock

sli motherboard ready for penryn chips

2gb of competent ram that can overclock fairly well.

You cant get a SLI ready motherboard that will support Penryn. One of the other mate?

Oh right. what do you reckon would be best? Get a mobo ready for penryn or get a sli motherboard and just get a quad core e6600 or something when the price cuts come about?

You already have the fastest card out on the market, the 8800 GTX. The performance you get from SLIed GTX just dosent warrant the cost of it. Go for one of the P35 chipset boards:

yeh ive been looking at that one. Looks good, but i also like the look of the ds4 with the all round copper heatsinks although i don't know whether i will really need it  or whether it will fit the sythe infinity.

im thinking at the moment at getting a core 2 duo e6420 and a gigabyte p35 psr3 but i don't know what ram.

Whats the board your getting, linky?

Get something like this:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.13GHz (1066FSB) - Retail
Gigabyte GA_P35C_DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 & DDR3 Motherboard
Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-5300C3 667MHz Dual Channel Kit

Total : £312.81

geil 6400 ull or crucial balistix 5300

ive just sold my geil to get the crucial and its only managed 930 5-5-5-15 where as geil topped out at 898 4-4-4-12 so theres not much in them
